Debt worries?
Does anyone worry about being in debt anymore? I have several friends/family mambers who spend, spend, spend, they say they are up to the hilt in debt but it does not stop them booking holidays etc. I try really hard to live within my means. I pay my mortagage and my car is on credit but that is it. I don't think I could sleep at night if I owed more than I could pay. On the other hand i can't help but feel a bit pi88ed off when everyone else has all the latest gadgets and keep jetting off to sunnier clime's! Do you live with debt, does it worry you?

Hi Bunches
Yes, we also have reasonably well paid jobs and usually manage to have a couple of hols each year, we ssave for them though, we are not that well off that we can just go and but things on the spur of the moment.

I only have one debt which is my mortgage. Should be a happy time for me, as it's almost done, but have recently found out that my endowment is nowhere near to clearing it off. I now have to think up some miracle fix to ensure that I keep my home!! I'm gettin' the botty runs every day and don't know how it will all turn out. I have never been in debt and it's scary!!!!!

you are doing the right thing. my mum and dad always lived to their means whilst my mums sisters and husband spent like crazy. now my mum is comfortable and secure with her home paid for and money in the bank whilst all her relatives struggle to live on a pittance. one of my aunties has a terminal illness but still has to work at 72 because she still has a mortgage.
i'm not 40 yet and mines nearly paid off, so stick with it. i can afford three hols a year now and its nice to know they are paid for before i go.

I got myself into a bit of a mess last year due to the spend spend
spend and seriously do no spend spend spend anymore!

My parents are £16k in debt!

Gary
Stick to what you have been doing. You are doing the right thing. Your friends and family members are enjoying their retirements now. What would happen if any one of them lost their job next Monday morning? Companies frequently downsize, lay off people, cut back working hours, and some people even have to take pay cuts to keep their jobs. Sooner or later you friends and family members will be facing a day of reckoning. Don't be around them when it happens because they will be asking you to bail them out. Never loan money or go into business with your friends, relatives or family members.

I am like you, I try to pay my way and I do without most things until I can save up for them. It does get frustrating sometimes though and every now and then I have a little splurge on something I shouldn't, well I am only human after all.

Edit. A couple of holidays a year?? Lucky you, I am a disabled single mother, I think my idea of living within my means is very different from yours. Haven't had a decent Holiday for years!

No, I don't live with debt. Like you, I pay as I go, and rest easy. Believe me, the "spend spend spend" will catch up with them. When you and I retire more or less comfortably, they will still be scrabbling to make payments on things they used up ten years before.

if they are living in debt then they are paying more than you for everything. If you save up for things then you are paying the asking price. If they are going into debt to pay for things then they are paying interest on the loan.
The only time i go into debt is if i find a bargain and the interest on my payment is less than what I have saved by buying sale goods.

Living within your means is one of the keys to financial independence. You're doing the right thing. It's OK to be a little jealous about your friends with all the goodies, but your time will come. When I was younger I went to college. Some of my friends got high paying construction jobs. When I was out of college they had moved up the ladder and were making even more and had accumulated a lot lots things (cars, stereos, cameras, nice clothes, etc.) I was broke and with my first job they were making more than me. I began asking myself why I went to college. Then my career began taking off, some of them ran into economic downturn problems and now I'm almost set for life. I'll have my mortgage paid off later this year and I will have no debt. Keep up your saving ways and you will look back at this time realizing you were right and they were wrong. Good luck!

Stay as you are it is much better to be in control of your finances than to worry where your next pound is coming from.In the past i was in bad debt i even had to borrow money for petrol to get to work but I'm now in full control i don't spend what i ain't got and i sleep well every night. If you want a holiday or anything then put money away for it when you can you will enjoy it much better to know that it as been paid for instead of dreading what post you are going to get.

If it is a mortage or college student loans than yes I do have debt but I am trying to pay those off as quickly as possible as well as save the maximum allowable in my 401 K and IRA. I am on schedule to be totally debt free by 43 which isn't bad given the status of so many other people. My parents were terrible at managing their finances so I learned from their mistakes and have stuck to it. I don't want my wife or children to have to worry about their financial status while I'm here or when I'm gone. Stay with it and keep on the path that you are going.

All i can say is good las well done, treat yourself one day after the car is paid of well done

Hiya Spegali

I guess my wife and I are extremely lucky. We both have good jobs and earn good money. Not had to worry about debt for a few years

Debt is a problem for millions of people in the UK, and it WILL be a problem for many of them. I had to sell my house because it was the only moral way I had of clearing my problems....i'm now debt free, but have to rent!

I'll never go back to the 'spend...spend' days, it's much nicer to pay for things with cash!

I'll never own my own home again, but at least i can sleep at nght now!

Keep control as you're now doing...it'll pay you in the end!
