a coffee free bag of revels | Did you claim uneployment benefit when you were unemployed? |
or did you feel bad sponging and manage another way? |

I think there should be a rule where you built up credit whilst working just in case you are made unemployed - so if you work for 5 years you can claim up to 5 months benefits, if you work for 10 years, 10 months benefits etc. etc. and after that it stops, the balance has to be right, it would stop people living off benefits and 'scrounging'as you put it, but would still be there for genuine people in difficult curcumstances, which we can all have in our lives.
the person from HR who said claiming doesn't take anything away, surely the less government have to spend on benefits the more there is left in the pot for other things, it doesn't just disappear does it??? Which is not to say it won't be spent on needless wars of course...
Alien, did you ever consider that people might just be honest???? |

I lost my job through injury and was unemployed for 3 months. I now work part time. I have my bills, mortgage etc. to pay and things are tight, but no, I didn't claim any benefits. |

The first time I was 'un'employed they said they wouldn't give me any money for several reasons. Firstly I was technically still self-employed. Secondly I have some savings and thirdly my girlfriend earns a reasonable wage, so all in all I had no chance of being given any benefit money. So since then, when I've had gaps in my work I haven't bothered even to claim. |

Yes just for a few weeks whilst looking for a job or I wouldn't have been able to pay for my car, which I needed in order to get my next job! I think it's okay to claim benefits on the short term, like can throw us unexpected things sometimes and we can find ouselves in desperate circumstances and this might help for a few months whilst we get back on our feet, however I don't think there is any need for anybody in the UK to be out of work for longer than a few months, there is always work to be had, if people claim for longer than say 6 months I think they are starting to rely on it and thinking of it as an 'entitlement' rather than a temporary helping hand as a one off....
Friendly Alien, don't judge everybody by your own standards. |

No - I did some cash in hand jobs and just managed, I wouldn't dream of claiming even though I pay my taxes, I'd rather they be used on other things like health care or the elderly. |

I am unemployed now and have been for nearly three months. I have not claimed unemployment or any other kind of benefit, nor do I intend to. I have worked for nearly forty years without ever claiming benefit and I don't want to start now. |

Yes I did claim when I was unemployed, it was either that or starvation. |

I would never sponge. and that is what I see it as, especially if it's long term. It's a last option emmergency thing in my opinion, when all else is lost and you have lost all self respect or morals. There is always a way of getting by if you really put your mind to it. If people took responsiblity for themselves an their own lives rather than expecting other decent people to do it, the world would be a much better place. Scrap child benefit too, it might make a difference to the number of teenage pregnancies..........! |

I was once unemployed for 3 months (most people can find some sort of a job if they really want to) and I used my credit card to live on, then repaid it when I got a job, I believe in taking responsibility for myself not expecting others to. |

I've never been unemployed, so no.
But I wouldn't call it "sponging" you are not stealing public money as much as you're taking the money you built up by working in the first place. |

Of course. I had worked for years and unfortunately my contract had run out. I was unemployed for about 5 months and claimed unemployment benefit while seeking a job. I would have been skint otherwise and felt I had worked so I was entitled to it. I hated being unemployed though and was so happy when I started working again |

Unemployment benefits is not sponging off of anyone. If you lost your job through no fault of your own you absolutely deserve to claim these benefits. You will find that they are considerably less than what you were earning but may be enough to keep you afloat until you can re-enter the work force. Your bills will keep coming and you don't want to default on any. Businesses pay unemployment taxes as part of doing business and this is your safety net for losing a job. You are not taking money away from anyone by using unemployment benefits. |
