Direct deposit possible mess up . .?
Okay so heres the problem. . My work told me I was going ot get a raise or a bonus for helping out in such hard times with the company . .now I get direct deposit every other week . .now I was never told when I was getting the raise or bonus but now I have a large amount in my account. . its about 400 more then I normally would get . . .do you think this is a mess up and should say something. .or keep my mouth shut and have fun with my hard earned money!? please help! and what happens if I don't say anything pay some bills and there happens to have been a mix up .. will I have to pay it bakc or is it their loss for not making sure hte correct amount was deposited!?
Additional Details
My statement on line said it was from my work .

If there is a mix up- the bank will take the $ back. Just double check with your payroll area that the bonuses were given out. You could even call the bank and ask them to look up you last few deposits and tell you where they came from. If it came from your work you are probably fine.

Landa M
You should question it. It maybe the bonus they promised you. You just don't want to get stuck with it being a mess up because you will have to repay the money.

I'd say it's the bonus, but you should say something..... if it was a mistake and they do catch it later down the road they will withdraw it from you account, they have every right to, and then that might make you negative later on down the road....

You should be able to call your bank and see where the extra 400 came from or I would wait until your statement came at the end of the month to see where it was from.

lexy
First you should look at your pay stub and see if there is an increase in your gross pay. You may have also been given the raise retroactively - meaning it was backdated. So the $400 could represent more than one pay period worth of increase.

You should know that if the company made a mistake with your pay - they can have the bank withdraw the overpayment. Also if the bank made a mistake - they too can fix the error at any time. (This is all in the paperwork that no one reads when you open an account) I wouldn't spend the money until I knew it was mine - that way you don't have to worry about it.

I sure hope it is your raise - then you can have a great Memorial Day Weekend!!!

Check your pay stub and see if it is listed as a bonus or call your supervisor and check. It will be so much worse if you spend the money to find out it was an error and have to pay it back. Good luck.

If it says from your job then call or talk to someone and see if thats your bonus..

JC
If is was from your work you should receive a pay stub for the money or it will show on your regular pay stub.... If is was a mistake it can be corrected. I would ask them if that was the bonus they were telling you about.

it should be the bonus, however even with direct deposit, you still get a pay statement explaining everything

Did they tell you the dollar amount you'd be given or just that you'd be given a raise/bonus? If no amount was mentioned, don't worry about it.

It's my understanding that if they put it in your account they can't come back and say - oops, my bad, and take it out.

if you're concerned about it then leave it be for a month or 2 and then spend it.

jojo
check the deposits to your account.
If you have valid questions ask them, you will be
held responsible if you spend money that is not yours

You should definately say something because honestly it's theft to take what hasn't rightly been given to you. It would be in your best interest to check it out and make certain this extra deposit is in fact meant for you to have.

I ran into the same problem a year ago when I first started my new job. It was my very first paycheck, and well...I was told I was gonna be getting paid one amount, but my check was way over that. Instantly, all the thoughts you just mentioned ran through my head....should I just keep my mouth shut and enjoy the money, or should I do the 'right' thing and be honest about it. Well...after much debating, I decided that character counts, and as much as I didn't want to let go of that extra cash, I knew it probably didn't belong to me. So, the next day at work, I told my boss..."I think I was overpaid", and much to my delight and surprize, he said "no, you were paid the right amount" and it was at that point I found out about my first day $5k/year raise!! Now, had I not said anything...with my luck....it would have been a computer error...lol!! So, I would say, first, take it to your boss...they will commend you for your honesty...

however, if it's a bank error...and you spend it...you will still owe it back to the bank. Bank errors don't constitute free money for us, unfortunately. I was in bank management for 9 years, and too often this scenario came up, and I've seen people's lives and accounts just turned upside down because of it.

I wish I could tell you to go buy yourself something pretty...lol...but in all honesty, you should wait til you know for sure.

I would tell them about it. There is a good chance that that was your bonus, but if it is a mix up and you do have to give it back, it would cause you financial strain to do so after you have paid your bills. The company will thank you for your honesty. Believe me, they will really respect you for doing that.

Sounds like that's your bonus. Have fun with it!
