Do I have to get new checks when I move, or can I use up ones with my old address? Why?

use them. if the cashier asks you if the address is current say the one on your check is. they like to have your current address in case it bounces. but since most places use electronic checking now it comes straight out of your account as if you were using a debit card anyway.
if you are going to use them for paying your bills be sure to cross out the old address so your payment doesn't get applied to the wrong account. but for at the stores, they don't like it when you cross out info or cover it with address labels. they usually reject it then.

Smalls
You can use your old one's if you like. I mean it's always better to have the proper info on them but no one will bother you about it.

I did it for a year.

dmoney
stores and markets may not take them. You can still use them to pay bills though so I would do that.

*Inter*
You can use the ones you have and if you want your address changed on the check just inform the bank

sure you can -- i would use to them to pay all the bills!!!

atomicdoug171
Use them up. You can even stick a small address label over the old address with your new address. As long as the check doesn't bounce the recipient shouldn't care.

AMarinesWifey
you can use the same checks until they are gone. sometimes the business will ask you to write your new address on the check. but i know this because i have moved a million times because of the military! so believe me, as long as the business is getting their money..they wont care!
your checks have your account number on them so they'll still work!

doglover
I moved almost 4 years ago and am still using my old checks. I put one of those little address stickers on the check. I only write one check per month for my rent, so I will be using the old ones a long time.

You could use your checks with your old address but if you are buying things with the checks they may use the address on there to use to send to your old address
But you should ask the bank which you are dealing with to confirm what i said

The Great Gazoo
you can use up the old ones just cross out old address and write your new one in.

Ernie From Ohio
You can use the old ones. They might ask you for an updated address but probably not. I have been using checks that have my address from 5 years ago, I have moved 4 times since then. :)

Nothing illegal about using them, the only problem comes if you are mailing a bill, the check gets separated from the check and someone tries to return it to you, it goes to your old address and then has to be forwarded to you. In the meantime your bill is late and you don't realize it until you get the late notice. But how often would this happen.

I would use them up for things that don't matter but go ahead and order new ones for things you what to make sure they have your correct address: ie: irs tax payment or house payment etc.

Anon Kirby
Use up the existing checks. You moved, it's an address change, not that you switched banks. The checks are still valid, unlesss there's no money in the account.

yes, you live at a new address.........

pomegranatepants
you should be able to use them and write your new address on them. if the place you're writing the check to doesn't accept them with your handwritten address, then that's their decision.
