Do I have to pay a debt which is over six years old and under my previous surname.?
The debt in question has been purchased by a company named Activ Kapital UK Ltd. They have sent me a letter addressed to me under my old surname. Do I simply ignore their letters
Lee is right, if you haven't had any contact at all regarding the debt in 6 years (I think) then you don't have to pay the debt.
I would take the letter into a solicitor/CAB or maybe your council have a debt help agency. They will help you sort things out, dont ignore the letter though as it will make things worse for you, nip it in the bud now !

i always thought that if a debt doesnt contact you for is it either 6 or 7 years it is written off
ceri ann
I'm quite sure money debt has to be 12 year old of no contact before it has to be written off.
Go to Citizens Advice Bureau - they can help!!

You dont say who the debt was originally taken out with. If it was a credit card or personal loan it may be possible to get the debt legally cancelled. Contact www.bdebtfree.info for help.

It is your debt whether taken under a different name or not.
Pay up or they will chase it and it will be worse for you in the long run.

Not necessarily. I'd read this, you'll see there are variables: http://www.payplan.com/debt-library/joint-and-several-liability-the-limitation-act-1980.php
You may want to take advice from the CAB or a solicitor.
rennickelizabe
pay it anyway as if you don't they will take you to court
starlight
you can ignore them but evventually they will serve court papers for a ccj on you, and baliffs will visit you. Even if your surname has changed it will still be same on your birth certificate. ive had dealings with these people and thats what they did to me. They sent baliffs to my mums house aswell so be careful. in the end i was forced to go bankrupt to get them off my back

Yes you do, It does not matter how many times you change your name you will still have to pay the debt off.

The real issue is Are you honest or a thief. IF the debt is one you created no matter what name you used YOU are to pay it. IF you are not honest then No you dont. IF you caused it you should pay it.

You need to pay your debt. There are ways to find you.
