Do cheques have an expiry date?
I have a cheque from the 23rd August and I'm wondering if it can still be cashed? I don't know if there's a time period on that or not. Thanks :)

Usually they do. Cheques are bill of exchange and they have an expiry period. The length of time it is valid for depends on the jurisdiction you are in and a check with your banker would tell you the period of its validity. In some countries it is 6 months and in some it is 3 months (that is about the minimum usually-so your cheque is probably still valid)

Druantia
Cheques have a six month expiry date whether business or private. Sorry, but the bank won't accept it. Try it and see!

timsdad
legally there is no time limit, except if it is on the cheque "use by"
normally 6 months,
if in doubt get the issuer to give you a new one.

fantasia.
I think there is a 6 months expiry date.

not sure i am just awaitng my first cheque book, exciting!!!

girlwhoknowsitstrue
Personal cheques can be 90 days - corporate cheques can be 180 days.

katehughes2706
Yes you can still cash it at your bank, you have 6 months to do it.

Yes.!!!
It can vary from 3 months to 6 months.!!!

Suz
English cheques usually have 6 months, this can be discretionary and can vary from bank to bank.

In UK

Cheques are valid for six months from the date of issue. Any cheques older than six months will be refused by the bank and you will be told to get the issuer to give you a new cheque.

Some cheques are valid for longer or shorter periods. If this is the case it will be printed somewhere on the cheque and will say something like " Valid for 1 year from date of issue" or "Payable for 3 months from issue"

nicnacpaddywhack
Cheques have an expiry period of 6mths - banks wont accept post-dated cheques now, nor ones more than 6mths out of date.

they usuallly have to be cashed withing 6 months of the date written on the cheque. The bank will usually cancel uncashed cheques after that.

♥Robin♥ (Scot,UK)
Technically there is a time-limit on cashing a cheque, but most banks are so busy and careless that the issue date is, in practice, rarely noticed or acted upon and will process the cheque favourably.

TheYorkshireRose
they have to be cashed within 6 months in UK so you still have time!
Are you so rich that you don't need to cash it???!!!

It is usually 6 months. If it is a cheque from a business like a gas company, you can usually ask them to reissue it if it is passed the expiry date.
