(Arabs > Americans) = true;
Do paying bills late affect credit rating?
I am in school and move between my apartment and my house and sometimes I don't receive a bill because I'm not around and miss the due date. Does this affect my credit rating at all? These are for general utility bills like internet and electricity.

Yes. You should always try to pay your bills on time. Usually if utility bills are more than 30 days overdue they are reported and if they it is more than one time or constant they will report them. Check with your utility company and explain to them the problem and they will more than likely set up a plan for you so your credit will not negatively be affected. Utility companies are known for working with most people.

One late payment is usually no problem. If your payments are LESS than 30 days late and rare, again this is not a problem. When moving, you should notify your creditors and utility companies of your new mailing address so they can send you a closing bill.

It depends on how long the utility company waits before sending your information to the 3 credit bureau, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Generally as long as it doesn't exceed 30 days before you make your payment, you are fine. If you are really concerned about it some utility company will let you make a payment online or you can always call the customer service and make a payment over the phone.

Paying bills late does not help your credit rating. It's always best to stay ahead of the game. If you have problems with paying your utilities on time due to inconvenience instead of financially not able to pay on time, you could have what we call where I live "Sure Pay", Your payment is automatically withdrawn from your checking account. You will receive a statement to let you know ahead of time how much is taken out on what date.

Yes, any late payment can affect your credit rating and score negatively. My utility and cable providers both report to the credit companies and they show on my report.

Also, if you do pay them late it can trigger any credit card company to increase the interest rate that you pay.

Perhaps you can have your utility bills and Internet direct debited so you don't need to worry about the due dates.

Most bills like utilities are not reported unless they are more than 30 days late and even then probably not until you are delinquent. The ones to be concerned with are car loans, credit cards, and mortgages which tend to report frequently. Late payments on those will definitely be reported to the credit bureaus and affect your credit score.

For regular payments, you can set them up for online reminders and then pay them online and avoid being late.
