Do people actually manage to save money?
I was wondering how many people on answers actually managed to have some money (at least 5000 u.s.d )in their bank account.
Someone i know is only 33 and has 15,000 dollars.
When he told me this i said, "well done, that's a good amount of money, considering your age".Do you consider it quite alot considering modern times that are so costly?

he won't get married as he doesn't believe in marriage.
So you believe in modern days, everyone has more than 15,000 dollars in their bank account?

I think it's actually pretty easy to save these days.

Look at how people lived fifty years ago. My parents were raised in houses with dirt floors. Their clothes were hand me downs or home made, and were mended and darned. They grew most of their own food, and bought very little at the grocery store. They often walked for miles to attend school or work, and they wasted very little. What they bought cost a large percentage of their income.

Things have changed dramatically. If you live in a Western country, and you have no income, it is still relatively easy to get accomodation, food, and clothing. In fact, the basics people actually need (food, shelter, and clothing) are very cheap in relation to the average person's earnings. It's just that people don't want the dirt cheap house, or the ten year old, out of fashion clothes, or the simple food. So they spend a larger percentage of their income on the fancier version of what their grandparents would have been happy with.

It is easy to save if you want to save. It's just that people have deluded themselves into thinking that they need brand new, fashionable clothes, and a big, new car, and a big house in a flash suburb. If they lived within their means and saved for what they wanted, they wouldn't have to resort to credit to get things. They would actually get more for their money, because they wouldn't be squandering it on interest.

I'm not 30 yet, but I could go to my bank account tomorrow and get a cheque for $45 000 if I needed to. It alarms me that that fact makes me unusual. I don't make half what a lot of my friends do, but my partner and I are very careful with our money and we're trying to pay our house off in 5 years. We just don't spend all our money, and really, it's not that hard. It's just that some people are too lazy to control their urge to spend. We just don't buy stuff we don't need. Don't get me wrong, we don't walk around wearing rags and live on bread and water. We know how to budget, and we buy good quality clothes when they are on sale. We shop at factory sales outlets and buy in bulk. All these strategies help us stretch our money, so that we can live better for less.

Best wishes

Yea, 15k is really not much. You can't touch a house anymore with less than 20k. Also belief in marriage?!?
I don't understand I'm very atheist and I'm married. It doesn't have to be a religious thing. It's basically showing your love and tax breaks lol.

Paid monthly, first check I write is to myself for savings. 33 years of age I already owned a home, had retirement account into 6 digets and a year's salary in our emergency fund. Priorities is the deciding factor.

With a monthly budget of over $5,000, that wouldn't last us that long. I shop online to save money, gas, and time and I also teach others how to do it as well.

I don't know what's average, but I know what's possible.

It's not too hard to accumulate that kind of savings. It's hard to do it fast, naturally. This sounds really mundane, but the key is simply to spend less than you make. As long as money is flowing into the account, however slowly, the balance will grow.

In one of my favorite books, "The Richest Man in Babylon," the author suggests saving 10% of one's income to get rich. The thesis is that anyone can save that. If your job doesn't pay much, you may need to eat only rice and beans, and not own a car or cellphone, but it can be done. When you make more, then you add things, but maintain at least 10% savings. If anyone keeps that up, they'll have many times $15k by the time they're my age.

$15,000? I can but dream! I saved up for a year to go travelling and only managed to accumulate $4000.

Maybe for a single working professional its normal, but I find it hard having a savings of any type between the rise in prices and having 2 young kids and the expenses that go along with that. Although my cousin was working at wal-mart and managed to save almost 11,000 in a year but she lived at home with no expenses really. I suppose the fewer obligations you have the easier it is to save.

short answer: I consider it a lot :)

Beetle in a Box
It's actually not a lot at his age. Hopefully he has more put away for retirement. I see you say he has property, so I guess that's where his money is going. Hopefully it pays off, since it's risky to put all your eggs in one basket.

Saving money gets to be easier as you get a higher income. It helps to be married (dual incomes) but does not help to have kids.

Oh, and I have more than $5000 in savings and am 29 DINK (dual income, no kids).

15000 its nothing, when you'll get married you spend it all on party, oh maybe its better to spend all in party before getting married
