From the Treasury Dept.

--------------------------------------...

What denominations of currency are in circulation today? Will any new denominations be produced?

The present denominations of our currency in production are $1, $2, 5$, $10, $20, $50 and $100. The purpose of the United States currency system is to serve the needs of the public and these denominations meet that goal. Neither the Department of the Treasury nor the Federal Reserve System has any plans to change the denominations in use today.

--------------------------------------...

----------------------------------------...

What denominations of currency notes is the Treasury Department no longer printing?

On July 14, 1969, David M. Kennedy, the 60th Secretary of the Treasury, and officials at the Federal Reserve Board announced that they would immediately stop distributing currency in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000. Production of these denominations stopped during World War II. Their main purpose was for bank transfer payments. With the arrival of more secure transfer technologies, however, they were no longer needed for that purpose. While these notes are legal tender and may still be found in circulation today, the Federal Reserve Banks remove them from circulation and destroy them as they are received.

Yes, and in 2005, 61 million of them were printed.

yes they do. now it is easier to get them.

Twisted
Yes they still make $2 bills. In fact they are planning on printing a new batch of them next year. The reason that they usually look so good is that people think they are rare and hoard them. They do not circulate as much as other bills. When you go to the bank all you have to do is ask if they have any. Most banks will have some.

"Today, there is a common misconception that the $2 bill is no longer in circulation. According to the Treasury, they "receive many letters asking why the $2 bill is no longer in circulation".[1] In response, the Treasury states: "The $2 bill remains one of our circulating currency denominations. According to B.E.P. statistics, 590,720,000 Series 1976 $2 bills were printed and as of February 28, 1999, there was $1,166,091,458 worth of $2 bills in circulation worldwide." However, "in circulation" does not necessarily mean that the notes are actively circulated, only that this is the amount that hasn't been redeemed for shredding. The Treasury states that the best way for the $2 bill to circulate is if businesses use them as they would any other denomination.

The most significant evidence of the $2 bill's reawakening would be that, in 2005 alone, 61 million $2 bills were printed by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This is more than twice the number of $2 bills that were printed between 1990 and 2001." -- Wikipedia

Hope that helps. There's a whole article on $2 bills at wikipedia of course, and your local bank chain should have some on hand (especially around Christmastime!)

Yup, they do. I just got a crisp one in the mail a few weeks ago for doing a mail survey.

the_quetzal
yes they still print them, not much though. 2003 was the last printing.

I had an English teacher in high school who used to pay for everything in 2 dollar bills; he was insane ^_^

They are still printed...sporadically. I think the last printing was in 2006, but when the supply in circulation gets low due to damaged bills being destroyed the US Mint prints more. Prior to 2006 the series 2003 bills were printed during 2004.
