sohpia07 | Do you ever feel like you are barely treading water financially? |
I live by myself in a privately rented flat. I have a day job (started 3months ago), and work 2-3 eves a week. I am trying to be more organised about my finances, but whenever my salary comes in so does a bill and i'm back to square to one. I am always in my overdraft. I feel like giving up trying to be organised. Additional Details Thanks for all your replies!
Its sooooooo good to know that I'm not the only one, sometimes it seems like everyone else is financially secure and I wonder where the hell I am going wrong.
Will def take on board some of your comments. (would love to ditch BT lol)
Thanks again =) |

A budget isn't a difficult thing to work out, especially if your income is relatively fixed and while there are things (family birthdays, the c-word, unexpected bills) that will surprise you, then you should be able to budget for yourself every month.
Obviously, rent has to be paid. So do things like water, electric, phone and these should be paid in that order of priority. It's no good having a mobile phone if you get evicted for not paying your rent!
Try to avoid non essentials. Just because you can't go out with your friends doesn't mean they can't come round, bring a bottle and you can be the location for the p*ss up without spending a fortune, just a few bites to eat.
And also look at some other things. Perhaps you have Sky or VirgenMedia. Work out if it's cost effective or if you could manage with FreeView alone. Make sure you turn off lights in non-used rooms, lower your thermostat and the fridge setting will all help reduce electricity bills.
Also try to look at how much food you actually eat and more importantly, how much you throw away at the end of the week.
Lots of little things can make a big difference to how much you have left over and maybe will get you out of that overdraft trap. Good luck. |

Sit down and work out where you money goes each month and work out when payments are due out for bills.
Also work out where you could save money - take a packed lunch to work each day, do you food shop online (if its free)
Like someone else said, getting a flatmate helps a great deal - have you got a friend in a similar predicament who would benefit from sharing?
But whatever you do, don't give up being organised - that will only lead to more debt and your problems will get much worse |

Can you cut a cable bill out internet bill and cell phone bill? Go prepaid its cheaper? Get rid of the lan phone?
Or something? Do not eat out any more, eat at home maybe?
Hows the job market your way, maybe you can get more hours at work, or find more work, rent a room or get a roommate?
Good luck, sounds like you will do wonders with your budget since your asking for help.
I know how you feel I have a strict budget and let me tell you I have no cable service, only internet but I am dropping it soon as I cant afford to have it no more.
I will use the lnternet at the library for free.
Time to get rid of excess bills. Play a lotto ticket if you win let me have 1000 dollars hehe.
Serious you will survice. It only takes a few simple changes to handle finances. First thing or first priority for me is the rent bill. After that is paid everything else is fine, can you get some help from the food stamp program, alot of people qualify and dont even realize it. |

I know what you mean. I have a budget which is tighter than a shark's ar$e, but sticking to it means I'm never in the red.
It's hard, but worth it.
Go through your finances with a fine tooth comb. Pay gas, electricty, water, phone *monthly*. Have a shopping budget and stick to it. Put money aside for car repairs etc... It takes a few months, but can be done. Stick with it! |

Oh i know how you feel, constantly robbing Peter to pay Paul,i hoped the older i got the easier it would be but its not the case.I try to make myself feel better by thinking there's always someone worse off than myself at least i have a roof over my head and my kids are warm and well fed.Although i get fed up just getting by,id love to have fancy clothes and exotic holidays but that's all material things,as long as you have your health. So your not alone!!...Take care |

I know what you are dealing with. I'm going through the same thing. Here is what I have done to help get my act togeather and actully start saving money and getting out of debt..
First sit down with your all your bills. Go through them and see what you can get rid of or cut down. Examples are cable, cell phone, home phone, internet, smoking, etc.. If you have a car payment get rid of it and get something for a few thousand dollars so the payment would be lower and paid off in a year or two.
Next, Carry a piece of paper with you and write down everytime you buy something. Keep track of this for a month or so. You will see that you probably buy stuff you could go without. Examples are lunch, take a lunch.. Morning coffee, make it at home and take with you.. All the little thing you can get rid of makes a big difference.
Now you might want to look at getting a roommate or possibly find somewhere cheaper to live. maybe a friend needs a roommate, just make sure not to break a lease.
When you go shopping write down your meals for the week ahead of time. Buy only what you have wrote down.. This alone will usually save you some money on not buying the food you will just throw away. Maybe you apply for food stamps, check your local office to see.
Now, if you have any debt that is collecting high interest you must pay it off right way. I don't know if you have any credit cards or any debt accuring higher interest but if you do pay the min. on everything else and take your extra money and pay it towards that high debt.. Keep in mind you also want to start saving to have a 3-6 month emergancy fund.
Good luck though you can do it. maybe look at getting a few more hours at work a few more evenings at night. maybe look at how to better yourself to get a raise or training for a new job. maybe going back to college or a different direction in your career. If your happy with what you do though that is the main thing. Overall happiness, health, family and friends are all you need. Hope this is helpful and best of luck to you. |

I know exactly how you feel. It's like I just can't keep up. Someone is always trying to get more and more money out of me.
I think they think I'm a bottomless piggybank. |

geez, it is a way of life for so many of us, but you know in the end it always seems to get better and there are always many people out there who are so much worse off than us. hang in there, you have a roof over your head, you have a job, and hopefully you have food in your belly and your health. try to stay positive. |

Don't give up ...
Think about what could bring in some extra cash ... maybe getting someone to share your flat with you, that'd cut down on bills? Make a plan of where you need to be financially ... you don't want to be working all the hours just to pay bills, you need to have money for yourself aswell. |
