5375 | Do you have any sympathy for the carmakers? |
I don't. Buying a new car is one of the worst experiences. I bought a new Chevrolet Trailblazer in 2005. Buying it was a nightmare. It took three hours of "negotiating" with the salesman going back and forth to the manager, till I was finally worn out and bought the darn thing for $30,000. It's a crappy car, that gets 12 mpg and it lost about 30 percent of its value the minute I walked out of the showroom. Now it's got 40,000 miles on it. I probably couldn't unload it for more than $11,000, so I'm stuck with the dinosaur. The whole car business stinks and I decided never to buy a new car again. No, wonder they're in trouble. I say go to Chapter 11 - Big Three! Additional Details When it was new it made a good presentation. I was stupid to buy it. But, the whole model, from the Unions to the dealerships, is outdated. Where I live, Tom Benson and Ronnie Lamarque have made big forturnes from the dealer business. I'm sure there's some car dealer tycoon in your town too. Something is wrong with the whole business model and it needs to be revamped top to bottom. |

nope.. they haven't learned a single thing..
they had the 73 oil embargo.. nothing was done...
they had the unleaded fuel change over in the late 70s... they barely scaved that...
hybrid? that should have been accomplished now and not be a painful transistion that's costly...
fly to D.C. with their private jets? wow, they are souless and inept...
sorry... they're morons... i can't believe they're getting a free ride, AGAIN!
they're so far behind the times in the auto industry they should go under to force themselves to work again!
most are desk jockies or they put put all day long at the golf course.... the only one's doing any work between donut breaks are the union workers and the money they get.... sorry.. cars are to expensive... they're old technology.. the only advancement in a car now days is a non-auto invention to begin with... from somoene who wasn't in the auto industry conglomerate...
the GPS!
hell, a cup holder is more advanced that all the vehicles being made today put together.
it's shameful.... cars are archaic! |

First of all, car makers and car dealers are different. Most dealerships and salespeople are just out to swindle customers period. Second of all, cars in general are one of the biggest liabilities a person can buy, as illustrated by your depreciation example not to mention repairs, insurance, maintenance, etc.
The big question is, why did you buy a $30,000 "crappy" car that only gets 12mpg?
And to answer your original question, no I don't have sympathy for *any* business owner that drives (no pun intended) their business into the ground. |

I do have sympathy for them, you could have walked away and not purchase that particular car, don't blame someone else for your mistake...You should of done your homework, by comparing prices and what not... So are you saying that buying a brand new car is worthless? So why didn't you buy a used car? you probably would of spend the same amount of money on repairs. |

If the Big 3 go under, it kills the American auto industry. tens of thousands more are now unemployed in locations that thrive due to the auto industry. I feel bad for the car MAKERS, the factory workers.
Your gripe is with the salespeople who have no affiliation with the manufacturers, and what you're pissed about has always been part of the process. You haggle with a dealer until you get to a price that makes both of you miserable. New cars always depreciate in value when you take them off the lot. You bought a Blazer in 2005, a huge SUV that got terrible mileage, that's your fault.
It sounds more like you didn't do your homework before you made one of the bigger purchases in your lifetime and now you're bitter. |

I have some sympathy for them because of unions. Toyota, Honda, Nissan pays less to their employess at every level compared to the big three.
I agree no bailout. If the execs drives a company to the ground their pay should reflect it. Oh and going into a chapter 11 doesn't mean everyone is going to lose jobs. Chapter 11 will mean they restructure and may lay some people off to trim fat.
Your rant is on two seperate issues - dealerships and automakers |

No I don't. Although, your example is horrible. It has nothing to do with the car makers. You made the decision to purchase the "crappy" vehicle. You could have bought something else.
I don't have sympathy for the car makers because I haven't heard of a single CEO or other top person taking a pay cut. They flew their private jets to DC to try and get money from hard working tax payers. Yes, the union workers probably make way too much at a time like this, but have they tried to negotiated with the unions? I suspect not. Instead they have decided to close plants and put people out of work. Why didn't they try to make more fuel efficient cars earlier? Why can japan and europe make better cars for years, yet the American cars are the same as they were 100 years ago (well not exactly the same, but you get my point). It is their fault and they should deal with their consequences.
I do however feel sympathy for the workers being laid off...oh wait no I don't because they make more in unemployment than any other unemployed person. It's in their union contract. Must be nice to still get paid from your former company. |

It's not the car industry that needs the financial help. It's the poor, innocent employees of the car industry -- the people who manufacture the cars, the components, do the assembly etc, in factories. They are the ones who need to have a job to go to on Monday. That is why there is a bailout. It's to keep the industry (and individual jobs) going, otherwise there would be mass unemployment.
Car dealers and car salesmen are bottom feeding scumbags. They aren't part of the bailout. They are just selling the cars.
If someone is working 8 hours a day on an assembly line, doing their job, it's not their fault that your car was crappy. You should stop seeing it as a 'me' and 'them' issue and regard them as individuals. They have families, mortgages, and also probably cars as crappy as yours turned out to be.
And I'm biased, because I'm an Australian, but American cars are pretty ugly, and they guzzle fuel too. I could never go to America. Too many ugly cars.
Best wishes |

chooses are great, but should they down the whole world as we know it will change.
the us will be a third world country.
plus try not to sound so uneducated, it cost gm ford 78 dollars an hour to per employee toyota honda only pay 44 and hour. imagine the car, truck they could build if they had that money to put into it.
they do not build junk they build what they can with what they have.
the UAW is all for itself not the company what good is the UAW if the company is not there.
do not hate american autos, hate the UWA. besides you cant find a better truck than a F150 just thing if they got the same support as toyota and honda. 44 per hour for each employee vs 78. They could make a much better vehicle. Greed is bad |

I feel no sympathy for the "Big Three Car Makers". It's because what they have done to people in the past who can't pay this month or next. They are the first ones to have the repo companies come and steal your car in the middle of the night. Now they want help??? Bull. they should rot and go out of business.....no bail out....no sympathy. |

You've got car makers and car sellers confused. The car makers that are in trouble I have no sympathy for whatsoever. They've spent more money lobbying to keep mpg requirements low and gasoline engines as the norm then they have trying to be innovative so we can avoid an energy crisis.
Car dealers I have a bit of sympathy for. They do swindle us with their deals, but I hate for anyone to lose a job. That's the problem with this whole situation. A lot of regular Americans are going to be without a job - not just the factory workers or car salesman, but the people who make the parts, ship the parts, workers in offices for these subsidiary companies, marketers for these companies, etc. The guys who flew to Congress are going to have plenty of money whether they have a job or not. Its the workers that are going to have the problems. |
