Do you have to have a bank account to cash a check at a bank?

xeuvisoft
Generally, Yes. Most banks will not cash a check unless you have an account with them. Otherwise they may charge you a fee or simply refuse to cash the check. This is true UNLESS you take it to the bank that the funds are drawn on. If you do this, they will cash it with proof of id. This is true for most personal checks and business checks. However, if it is a Cashier's Check, it can be cashed at any bank. As a cashiers check is gauranteed and is practically as good as money.

My advice is if the bank that the check is drawn on is reasonably close, take it there. Avoid check cashing services as they generally charge a hefty fee for the "conveinience" as will most competing banks. Also, A lot of check cashing services are hesitant about cashing personal checks. And if they do and it bounces you're liable for the full amount of the check plus extra fees.

An easier way to do it is if the check isn't too large, see if you can find a friend or relative that has a bank account who will cash the check for you.

ever_curious
no - if you just have an ID, its enough

lost_soul
No you can go to the bank the check was written on they will cash it. Or you can go to one of those check cashing places.

Not necessarily,
If you go to the bank that the check is drawn on they have to cash it

Eddy
No, but you must cash the check at the bank the check is from. Also you must present ID and credit card and possibly your finger print on the check.

If you go to the same bank that the check is drawn on, then you do not. You simply have to show identification and they will cash it for you.

I think it depends on the policy of the bank. They love ya when you bank with em. I think they might charge a fee if you don't have an account.

Alot of banks will cash it without an account but they charge you a service fee, which is usually based on how large the check is.

Some banks will let you cash a check there if you don't have an account but be ready to be fingerprinted and show several forms of ID

Frank
You can either cash a check at YOUR bank...or you can take a check to the ISSUING bank and cash it there. You don't need an account if you take it to the issuing bank.

But it really is a good idea to open a checking account if you don't have one.

No.

YES

Yes. Most banks do require that. However, at least in the past, it has been possible to cash a check at the bank where the checking account is held. One time someone gave me a check at a yard sale. For some reason, I felt uneasy about it. The next day, I went to their bank and cashed the check.

Of course, it helps if the issuing bank is located in the same town as you are.

Slam64
some banks yes, some no, but most that you don't have an account with will charge you so much for cashing your check. It would be worth it to me to open even just a little account to get free check cashing, don't you think?

joe b
A bank will require you to have an account. You can go to one of those sheck cashing places and they will cash it for a fee.
