but banks will put a * on your bank statement to indicate that the cancelled checks are out of sequence (just FYI in case someone got a hold of your checkbook) |

You can use them as long as the account information is still correct. It may be confusing for you to keep track of the numbers out of sequence, but if you can manage it, go ahead. |

You don't have to use them in order. That's really just for your reference so when check #123 clears you can match it up with your records. |

Yes you can use them, but you should probably contact your bank first. A lot of banks use check numbers to catch check thieves (in case someone steals your checkbook or a bunch of checks). That way if they catch a series of checks way out of order they can be alert to fraud. Let them know that you found a series of checks that are numbered XXX - YYY. That way they won't think its fraudulent and stop payment on checks that are in that series that you have actually written. |

It should be fine. Your bank statement will reflect the numbered checks out of order, but as long as you know what is happening with your checks, then you're fine. |
