I struggle to save, although I am starting to do better now things are getting more settled for me.
I have always lived with the view that experience in life is far better than material comfort. Now I have other people to think about so am having to change that view... |

I have had trouble saving money. That's why I have taken steps to make my saving automatic. A certain amount is taken out of my paycheck before I even get it and that goes into my TSP (401k). I also have automatic withdrawals take money out of my checking account that is placed into a Roth IRA. Above this, I try to stash an additional 100 bucks or so a month into a guaranteed online savings account for a rainy day.
This way, even if I waste my paycheck on something foolish, I still know I have stashed enough away to reach my retirement goals.
But all this and I still realize I should be saving more. |

Yes. Seem to very well at spending (great consumer). However, saving money is very hard because of the monthly expenses as well as others that come up on any given day. |

I save money quite efficiently. For every paycheck that I receive, I budget out all the required expenses, rent, traveling money, food, and a set misc. amount and then half of whats left I save that. |

We make good money but spend great money. We never had anything left over. I've done this before, but every time I get into a financial standstill, I read the book "automatic millionaire" by David Bach (or whatever his name is).
It's just the thing that works to get me serious and motivated again.
I saved over $50K in a year and a half. Now i've been in spending mode again and haven't saved jack since spring. I should read the book again, but I gave it to my financially challenged friend. Oh well. |

Yes I have trouble saving money. If I see it or have it in my pocket. This is what I have done to avoid this. Set up a spending plan. I have my income directly deposited into my checking account then I take out my weelky allowance(running money), pay my bills by PAC's (pre-authorized checking)so I do not forget to pay the bills, $ going into my money market account for emegencies, vac.,christmas, birthdays, home insurance, property taxes so I will be prepared when it is time to pay and earn interest. Then I have $333.33/month going into my Roth IRA, so I can retire at 60 or SOONER with no debt and plenty of $$$$. This does take time and displine. I am use to having new cars, nice clothes, eating out most nights. But I can either play now and pay later OR pay now and play later. |

I used to spend, spend, spend, until I realized having more $ in the bank and less things made me feel more secure in my life than having no $ and lots of things. Now it is rarely hard for me to pass up that new outfit or purse or dinner out when i know the $ can go sit in my bank account for a rainy day instead. We just had a flat tire on my van- cost $500+ to get new tires and have them aligned and all...a family member heard this and was HORRIFIED, thinking our Holiday must be ruined with a $500 unexpected expense ( I am a SAHM, we have a mortgage, my hubby is blue collar). Not in the least- simply took it out of savings, nice to have it there for such things. PLenty left in there too for the next 'surprise'. I want to leave my children a small fortune some day, not be a financial burden to them as so mnay who spend their $ foolishly do. |

I used to have trouble until I found out about this great trick. Get three piggy banks and put a quarter in each one every day. Then build up to 1 dollar and then 2 dollars and so on. When the bank is full, make a deposit with one in your savings account, give the other to charity, and the last one, make an investment. It's a great idea. |
