I'm 19 and I don't save...
I'm rather spoiled so I don't really know what it's like to have to struggle. I know I should be saving and I know it's going to hurt me in the long run but for some reason it just hasn't really hit me yet.
Whenever I get my weekly paycheck, I deposit it as cash in my bank account and go shopping. My parents pay for everything else, food, my cell phone, laundry, etc. |

I'm 25 years old. I have a good job as an engineer and get paid well. I still live pay check to pay check though because of debt I accrued while in college and before I landed this job. I use all my extra money to pay off credit card bills. I still have fun but I'm not able to save anything. My bills will all be paid off in the next year and then I will definitely start saving. I moved back home to try to cut down on costs such as rent and groceries, which has helped in getting the debt paid off sooner. |

At age 18 I was putting away $100 a month faithfully KNOWING that one day I would send a child to college. I have always planned ahead and it has paid off dearly.
Now over 40 I/we put away just under $2000 a month.(in one of our accounts anyway) We have to do this due to having our own business and needing to make our retirement years glorious. There are no excuses for not saving money.
: ) Happy Spring ! |

I'm 23 and in my first job out of college, and I make it a priority to save. I'm lucky enough to have graduated debt-free and gotten a good job though. I also do not have credit card debt.
I stretched my salary and bought a condo, so I have all sorts of bills my peers don't (like a huge property tax bill, HOA dues, etc), but still I make sure I contribute to my retirement account, save some every month in cash, and give at least 5% of my salary each month as well.
THEN I decide what else I can afford to do--eating out, utilities, gas, etc. I can't shop or go out as much as my friends can, but my net worth is growing every month. |

Even if you live paycheck to paycheck, you should invest something. You should always pay yourself first. You need something working in your favor because no one will retire you but you. Start off saving 10 percent to get in the habit. Like an earlier responder said you need to sit down and write out your speceific goals. Notice I said WRITE them down. That way you know exactly what you're saving for to make it easier. You might want to look into some good mutual funds. Since your money is tight, mutual funds are the best way to go to have your money work for you. Otherwise you'll be stuck in a rut forever. |

At 37, I am a little older than your target age, but I had to learn some things the hard way when I was younger. No one has an excuse not to save. I used to say that it was impossible to save. About 5 years ago I decided to get out of debt and begin saving. My income is $1,500 a month. I now own 3 houses, 2 vehicles, and am loaning money to people on http://www.prosper.com. I also invest $500 every month. How?
Sit down and make a list of all your expenses for the next 3 months. You will be shocked how much money you waste. The 3 biggest income killers are beer, cigarettes, and movies. You will also be surprised how much money you spend on fast food.
Using this 3 month expense list, make yourself a monthly budget. And live by it. You will be saving in no time. And your life will be far from boring. |

I used to live paycheck-to-paycheck until I decided to say, "ENOUGH!!!!"
Life is not so fun living paycheck-to-paycheck.
I asked myself, "What do I want to accomplish during my lifetime?" I wrote it down, and I asked myself, "How much will it cost to fund these dreams?"
Now that I had a plan, I had a REASON to start saving money!
I put together a spending plan EVERY month. INCOME - OUTGO = EXACTLY ZERO. I spend every dollar on paper BEFORE the month begins. Before the the money ever reaches me, I spend it on paper. Every dollar.
WOW! You talk about eye-opening! When I spent my money on paper BEFORE the money arrived, I saw how crazy my spending was! I was helping the credit cards, banks, and everyone else get rich while I was keeping myself POOR!
I started cutting extras out of my life. I did not go out to eat at restaurants much. I took cheap vacations. For fun activities, I did things that did not cost much money - fishing, hiking, gardening.
The result? 14 months later, I was debt-free except for the house! Now, four years later, I STILL spend my money on paper BEFORE the money comes in. I FORCE savings into it. I FORCE giving into it. It is my highest priority!
I will leave you with this one final thought ... The median family unit in America makes around $50,000/year. Over the next 10 years, they will have $500,000 pass through their hands! Yet, over 70% will have less than $1,000 to their name when the decade is over.
This FIRES ME UP, and it makes me want to help others learn what I have learned! I have a web site FULL of FREE tools that can help you do the same thing in your life! Check it out! |

I have my pay divided so that $100 a week goes into a separate account to go towards main bills and the like but even with those It generally keeps heading upwards but since I bought a car thats been mainly going towards paying my loan off quicker cos i don't see the point in leaving money sit in an account gathering less interest then what my loan will accumulate in that time so I look upon it as short term pain long term gain, cos my 4 year car loan will be paid off within 8 months so in about 3 months time I'll start reaping the rewards of the last 5.
So in general i try to save |

I save 10% of my annual earnings if I am disciplined. I know that if I owned a car, that any savings would be slurped up by petrol, insurance and miscellaneous.
Spending within my means feels easy, even though I do forego many experiences such as holidays and owning luxury items. |

We definitely live paycheck-to-paycheck, sometimes we even have to 'kite' checks. We own our own home and have three beautiful children, we both work but daycare is expensive and we have a lot of debt and a large mortgage. Living in the N.East is expensive! We even own our cars outright even though mine is really old. I wish we could save money. It's a scary feeling to always worry about the next bump in the road. I don't wish it on anyone... |

We are working out of debt but we are able to save.
You should be saving 15% of earnings for retirement after you have 3-6 months of expenses sitting in the bank for emergencies.
I suggest you read The Total Money Makeover by Ramsey & The MIllionaire Next Door by Stanley if you want to educate yourself about living within your means and having retirement later on in life. |

We live pay check to pay check and I am 48 Yrs old. Save? It takes everything we have coming in to make it. I really don't see how people are able to save. Sometimes we're lucky to have $50 left over til the next check.
True, my husband makes good money. We have a special daughter and I stay home with her. I don't work outside the home.
If you find out how to save when you don't have it in the first place, let me know. |

Saving money isn't hard for me at all.
I had savings in my budget before I added internet, cable, cell phone and vacations to my expenses.
I add fun things as my finances allow, not the other way around. |
