Best way is to figure out HOW much you need to put aside weekly for your spending categories... clothing, food, housing, transportation, etc. Try to keep the categories to a minimum... anything more than 8 and you're in trouble.
Once you have that worked out, withdraw the money you need for those categories at the beginning of the week. Do NOT use your bank card or debit card for anything, and STAY within the budgets you've set out.
You can borrow from other categories... say your grocery bill is $200 and you only have $180 put aside... take $20 out of clothing... and vice versa... but NEVER spend more than you've taken out.
If you can keep a log of everything you spend on, even better...
Once you get into this habit... then you can start going back to your bank and credit cards... |

Yes. My husband and I sat down and did this 3 years ago. We collected our past expenses to determine what we were spending and listed them in a spreadsheet in excell (by categories: car, electric, insurance, food, entertainment, clothing, investments, vacation fund, etc). Knowing what income we were bringing in and what we were spending helped us create a monthly budget. The budget even includes dog food / toys. We set a limit on pocket money ($20 each/ week) that we do not have to acocunt for. But all other money is accounted for.
This has been tremendous help to us creating a worry free, debt free life. We have never argued over money!
This is a wonderful opportunity to understand your finances. I hope you complete the exercise and create a working budget. |

I use Microsoft Excel,
I put the names of the month on the top colulmns, then date of my pay,
In the rows, I put all my bills by date they are due,
I add up all my expenses, then subtract my salary,
Then I know how much I have left and what I can pay extra on (lol if I have any left).
Put an X next to every bill you pay so that you don't forget.
Hope this helps |

Yes, definitely. You can make a simple, or not so simple, spreadsheet in Excel by first delineating your take home income and expenses. Make a line item for every expense (ie., food, clothes, laundry, personal products, gas, etc.) What I do is keep a graphed list of designated line items on the left and days of the month on the top. Each day I account for what I spend. Everything - coffee on the street, postage, anything and everything. By doing it this way, you can see where you're losing money (ie., eating out too much? buying too many Starbucks?) It took a while for my husband to join in but now he simply leaves his receipts for me to log into the spreadsheet. From there, you deduct your line item expenses from your take home pay (by the way, savings should be a designated "expense"), including monthly bills, mortgage, and whatever else you need to pay for each month. The goal is to live below your means, which means you spend less than you make and save for big item purchases. It may seem like a daunting task but once you get started all you need to do is plug in numbers and not get lazy. |
