jazmine | Do you think I can survive on 1400$ a month? |

You should be more than fine on 1400 , if your rent is 900 including everything that leaves you 500 for the month you could probably put some of that aside for later, why not talk to a banking expert or a financial adviser and see what he says about setting up a budget. I think $1,400 dollars is more than enough money? Come on guys cut the guy some slack, he did say everything was included and he was gonna go without cable and internet what a sacrifice to make to save money. |

No. If you live in DC and you can get an apartment for $900 a month. You must be living in a ghetto. I'm from the Maryland, DC, Virginia area and you can't get a decent apartment for that much. Not including utilities and other necessities. So you better get another job, or start looking for a better paying one. |

Whoa. That's crazy for rent. I know apartments in DC are expensive, but can't you get something cheaper? If your rent covers utilities, you can probably get by. But I think the rule is your rent should be around 25% of what you make. If you rent doesn't cover utilities, you'll have to pay for electric, water, phone and phone at the least, and that can get expensive. Maybe you could live with roommates or something to help offset the cost of rent. |

I found this through a search looking up apartment prices. I have never lived on my own and I was seeing what it would take to get the bear minimum of an apartment in my area by doing some calculating with expenses and such. some of the articles I have read up on points out all the expenses we often look over like buying soap or buying toothpaste...things you will need first off when you first move in. Those small things add up quickly.
What you are saying is you are paying $900 a month (possibly more if some utilities are not available to you) and you will have $500 left over. Be sure to think about car payments (if you have one where you are in DC), food payments which are dang expensive unless you live off noodles, and think about the acts of God we can never be certain of. If you do have a car and it suddenly dies...what will you do? How will you pay for it?
Personally, I'd look for something a bit cheaper and think about sharing the apartment and cutting the price in half. Spending $450 a month and having $950 to take of expenses sounds a lot better if you give it some thought.
Hope I helped as I am too looking into getting a better paying job and soon moving out. I certainly can't afford all I need to afford right now! I'd suggest looking up tips on google on how to prepare to move out. |

You might want to check to see if you are eligible for rent subsidy and food stamps, electric and gas discounts because of low income.
DC is expensive. You won't be doing much on $1400. |

No. You will not have enough for utilities & groceries. Plus you need too consider gas/transportation to and from work, other misc. bills, etc. You probably can afford no more than $500 a mon. towards rent. Look into getting a cheaper place with a roommate if possible. |

You may have to shop at thrift stores and eat at soup kitchens. |

What's included in the rent? Even if the $900 includes heat and utilities, in my opinion, you still wouldn't be able to afford to live on only $1400 a month. Think about it. Besides the rent, you need to be able to afford heat, electricity, telephone, cable, internet, groceries, clothes, transportation, entertainment, lunches, haircuts, medical bills ...
In general, your rent shouldn't ever be more than 1/3 your salary. You'd need to make almost twice what you do now in order to afford that apartment comfortably. |
