Yes, you should be glad. I have three kids (one is the avatar) 4, 2 and 0 (due date is late this month). We don't have cable and the kids get along fine. We have a large selection of kids shows that we picked up from thrift stores and of course there is always PBS. They some playmates with cable, but they hardly watch it because they are running around trying to kill each other. Kids.
If your kids are older then they should definitely not be in front of the TV. They should be doing all the activities you mentioned. My parent did not get cable until we all moved out. They will be fine. Kids need to know that they cannot have everything. If they -really- still want it, tell them that you will have it turned back on if they can pay for it. Have then do odd jobs around the neighborhood until they have earned enough to pay for a few months worth. After they have to work hard just to watch TV, cable will loose it appeal. |

At least it was just your cable bill and not something important like the water or electricity. They will be upset but they will also get over it. Find something else to do besides sitting in front of the TV set all day. |

Well thats life, sometimes there is a cash shortage and you cannot even buy food let alone watch cable TV! Now which is worse no food in your stomach or no Cable ? I am sure they are well fed kids arent they ? Ask them if theyd rather go hungry so the cable-bill can be paid so they can watch it on empty stomachs ! I know which one they will choose. |

Just be thankful you have money for food! Kids watch too much TV anyways. This would be a perfect opportunity for YOU to do things with your kid away from the TV. :) |

being without cable tv bites but what is worse then that is being without the nessecites such as electric or water or heat this is a good time to get them to become more active and more into books and board games just make some family fun time they ll get over it soon enough |

Having been in financial situations many many times before I can sympathize with your situation. However with that being said - now that they don't have one of thier past times - are you going to give up sitting on the internet which you obviously chose to pay for over the cable and spend time entertaining them? Life is about choices - make the good one out of respect and love for your children. |

if you dont have money then they have to understand and go about reading playing game and yes it is going to be a good thing to get you and the kids to become closer by talking and not getting in to a movie |

No, it is not bad and you have no reason to feel guilty about it. Kids have to learn the value of money. Cable TV is a luxury, not a necessity!
Teaching them to let go of certain things in life will help them in the long run. Of course they will gripe, whine, and complain for a while; but trust me, they WILL get over it....

I know how easy it is to get into this situation (having been there myself). However, cable TV is a luxury. As is owning a TV, cell phone, AC, dishwasher, etc, etc, etc. In my opinion, you should have discontinued cable service (and other luxuries) yourself long before you ran out of money.
I think you already knew the answer to this question. You just needed ammunition for your kids. You're the parent! You set the rules. Don't set the example for your kids that they need to get validation from the internet community. We are not your friends, family or clergy. |

I have never had cable or satalite. My grandparents were born in the 1800's and they never knew any such thing. They also never saw a microwave oven. They did not have a phone and would have to go to the post office to use the phone to call me. They did ok. They became some of the wealthest people in the little town they lived and died in.
My kids have never know about cable till I got divorced. The first thing thier mom did was get cable. They visit mom every other weekend and watch tv all weekend.
With me its bikes, books, bouncing on the tramp, playing dress up (they are getting old enough now that I think they are growing out of that one) collecting bugs, roller skating and the list goes on. Over the summer my middle daughter put on a lot of weight. Too much tv at moms house. Its time for her to get out and move.
Yes the kids will miss it at first. Yes they will be better off for it. |
