I don't use credit cards. I had major debts due to various problems over the years, and finally paid everything off at the start of this year - its a great feeling when your finally debt free!
Since then I won't use any form of credit, and survive quite happily only spending what I have. Use my debit card for everything as no longer use cash unless I really have to.
I don't suffer at all from not having a credit card, and its very comforting knowing I won't ever get back in debt. Even with the best intentions, if you have a credit card its all too easy to put stuff on it "just this once"!
Personally, I would cut your credit cards up, maybe keep 1 as emergency but lock it away somewhere, don't carry it round with you. |

it's a great idea! i work as an adviser with the citizens advice bureau and see tons of debt cases.
i was amazed a few weeks ago as i stood in the queue at a mothercare store and watched as the cashier signed up the woman in front of me to a store card, just saying "you can get 30 points if you use this, i only need to see a bank card as ID" - she never even asked if she worked and could repay the money, or even told her she was signing up to a credit agreement! (plus she never asked for proof of address - how's that going to help fraud!)
my point is it's just so easy to get credit, and so easy to find yourself in a situation where you get into debt, ie loss of job, illness or relationship breakdown.
it's just such a pity we have this 'have it now' culture - we should be teaching our kids to save up for things they want in life!
we personally live without credit cards, and although we don't have much spare money i'd never use a credit card to buy things, you just pay so much more back in the long run. |

yeah i've never had one and never will. if icant afford something i save up. it's much quicker to save up than it is to pay off loans with all the interest. |

yeah i have a few but i hardly use them. if i do i send the money i spent on it with the next payment. But i got rid of 2 and i've had no probs. it will get you into trouble if you use them and dont have the money for the stuff later. |

You bet its a great idea. People obsess with the whole credit score thing.
Credit card companies make all the rules and can change the rules anytime they want.
Banks spend millions brainwashing people into thinking they need credit and a high fico score to make it in todays world. Thats a load of crap.
Save your money and pay as you go. You will come out ahead. |

I have 3 cards but am in the process of paying them off . Like you i cannot wait to cut them up and bank the payment they have been taking off me for years. Have a star as more people should be saving and not spending what isn't theirs. |

Miss I know it all.

yes, i think its a great idea because credit cards are there to put peoplein debt, i only use my debit card, so i dont have to worry about debt. debit cards users are usually very careful how they spend their money. |

Cutting them is the best thing you can do. But dont close the accounts. Closing the accounts will lower your credit score. |

My boyfriend and I have a joint card but neither of us knows the pin or even if the card activated so we manage to do without :-) And yes it's nice to not have a credit card bill hanging over us each month. |

Well done for clearing all you debt on credit cards. I only have a debit card, so if i dont have the money, i cant have the goods. This encourages me to save for the more expensive things that i really want, and it makes me appreciate it more when i get it. |

I did that once. It was like my air supply had stopped. I was in a terrible state. Am now back using the cards, but it was good while it lasted. It certainly cleared alot of debt. Well Done You. I will give you a star for being so brave! |

Good going! Being out of credit card debt is good. Remember to save one for traveling. Many hotels will ask for one when you check in even if you pay in cash for incidentals and car rentals always require a credit card.
Even though you have a $0 balance on your cards do not close the accounts. It doesn't reflect good on your credit report. A $0 balance open account gets your score higher than a closed account and the longer you have it the better.
Writing checks or carrying cash can be a hassle. I use an American Express card and pay it off every month. In addition I get points and they add up pretty fast. Since January I've gotten about 33,000 points. Anyway Congrats! |
