Do you think my friend tried to scam me?
I have a friend, who recently rented a house with her husband of one year. Beforehand, they barely could afford anything, and constantly asked me for ridiculous amounts of money. ($300 here, $500 there, etc.) I questioned as to how they would afford this house, especially when I received a message asking if my husband and I could help pay the security deposit.

Well, it is time for their first rent payment of $700. Go figure, their check bounces. I receive a message from the couple asking for $700 to make the payment. Of course, I'm not giving out money without the exact situation. Turns out, the husbands paycheck went in a day late, causing the check to bounce. When I explained that they should still have the money, minus the return check fee, their only response was, "We don't know how banking works. We need $700."

Could they be lacking common sense, or are they just trying to con me because they really don't have the money? Opinions?!
Additional Details
Oh yeah! After I explain to them what happens when you bounce a check, the only answer I get is: "Oh well, I guess it didn't bounce."

Just sounds shadey to me! Luckily, I've never given them a cent because their stores and excuses were fishy.

If they don't know how a bank works than they need to find someone to handle there finances for them. If I were you I'd stop and tell them that they need to start being accountable for there money and stop asking you for it.

sounds like they ARE scamming you.. or just taking advantage of your hospitality. i wouldnt give them another cent.

They are just trying to get money out of you. There's people out there who will due this to their own family. They have no conscious.

Friendship and loaning money don't always mix well. Sorry, but I don't think this friend is trustworthy or a very good friend. I think they're either scamming you or taking advantage of your friendship.

No, they aren't scamming you. There are people actually that stupid. When you know what their bad track record is, you probably should not have done them the favor in the first place. You were not surprised they did not pay you, right? Functionally illiterate people often act this way. They don't know how a checking account works! My opinion: They really do lack common sense. You may want to see an attorney about eviction proceedings or at least put your foot down. Pay rent or else.

kellie_luther
are you serious right now? how can you even have this question? they've borrowed hundreds of dollars, dont thank you and now want 700 for rent, how are you able to keep giving out this money and not have a serious question as to where the money goes?

i dont think she's scamming you, i think u both need to wake up. close your pocketbook and send her to a class on money mgmt.

Heather
definately scamming you. Have they ever once payed you back? If not, why should you lend them money when you know you not getting it back? Are they good friends? Seems like they arent to be using you just for money.

It's hard to know if it's a scam or ignorance but one thing is certain... you will never get your money back if you lend it to them.

If it's ignorance you may not be helping by constantly bailing them out. They need to learn responsibility. If it's a scam...they are not friends.

if they have paid you the money theyve previously borrowed (which doesnt sound like the case) than they are not scamming you. but if they keep asking and asking and never pay you back, than they are completely taking advantage of you.

Cinna
That is not the actions of a friend but you have proven to them over and over that you are an easy mark for a scam or con or whatever you wish to call it. Wise up and move on because they are not the kind of people you need in your life. It is not necessary to buy friends.

Wow, those aren't friends! They have mistaken you for an ATM. Time to lose them! Count the lost money so far as tuition in the school of hard knocks. Don't talk to them or return their calls. They are no friends to you.

Tyler
I may only be 15 but my father had expierences. In my opinion I think that she is taking advantage of you. I can not say she will not pay your money back, but I have a hunch if you pay her that money you will never see it again. I mean come on that is very rude and out of the ordinary that someone will ask a friend for that kind of money. If i was you (and this is me personally) I would tell her very nicely I am sorry but we do not have the money to give out either.

Good luck and my blessings are with you.
