Do you think that CD rates will go up very much between now and a few years from now?
How much do you think they will go up? Do you think that inflation will go up too so that even if they do go up it won't matter much because inflation will be eating away the gain?

Rates cannot obviously go down any further from where they are, and with the possibility of inflation looming, they can only rise.................. eventually. As to when, no one knows. As to how much bank rates will follow, also no one knows, but the odds are with the Fed keeping tight controls over the economic scene, if they do rise, it won't be by that much.

Judy
Interest rates could easily double in the next 5 years.
So a 10 year cd that is currently paying 3.5% could easily start paying 7% again!!!!

Probably...but it depends on a number of things that are not currently certain.

Right now we are actually experiencing mild deflation. If it continues or worsens to a Japan-like death grip, rates could go to zero and stay there. (Think I am joking? Go look up the interest rate history for Japan over the last 20 years).

Although the amateurs are all screaming about inflation in the future, the experts are more divided in their future projections.

All that aside, cash investments -- CD's qualify -- almost always fail to stay ahead of inflation over the long run. Only long term bonds have a history of occasionally beating inflation after taxes in periods greater than 7 years.
