Does anyone else have issues with the divide of bills with your partners?
I have no idea if this is fair or not, and I dont want my relationship to come down to 100% splitting bills, but this seems somewhat unfair.

My partner makes slightly more than me a month, I pay for all the monthly rent which takes a majority chunk out of my wage. I also pay the sky bill.
My bf Pays the water and gas which amounts to about £50.
He does pay for most food that goes into the house, but i cant help feeling like this is an unfair split? He doesnt see it this way.

How can I approach this subject with him and any ideas how to sort it out?

Thanks

It sounds like your paying much more than him and that is just not fair.
You need to tell him that rent and energy bills need to be split in half.
Then with food take in turns paying.
If he thinks it is acceptable to pay £50 a month while you pay sky and hundreds in rent, then he sounds like not too nice a person. He sounds extremely selfish.
You need to be firm and tell him to set up a standing order into your account for half the rent and sky and then split the energy bills. If he won't do it then get rid of him!!

me and my partner work it better than that

One wage pays all the bills & we live of the other persons wage for food, socialising & saving. we look at it as 'our money' not mine & his

your way doesn't sound fair to me.

OMG! Im in exactly the same situation. I pay the mortgage, while my boy'f pays all bills and food.
This is fine usually...as it comes out to ROUGHLY the same...sometimes! However, if we need food in between shops, I find myself getting it in my lunch break and usually this amounts to around £30 - £40 a time...just on the basics! I dont find this fair either...

The way I have got around it, is iv asked him to put £50 a month in a house keeping pot in the kitchen....then if I need anything I can take some dish from there!! It seems a little old fashioned...but its working and all the little things soon add up...which I cant afford!!

Hope this helps chick

Well this should have been sorted from the beginning, both of you should sit down with all monthly bills, open a joint account, to pay for them and each of you deposit equal ammounts of money. If he objects, I`m afraid he won`t change, and you will end up covering your share and part of his, and that is a no no.

Personally, I would be splitting all the bills 50/50. That way no-one can say they pay more or less.

My partner pays the mortgage, the gas and electricity bills, and the mobile bills, and i pay the cable/broadband/home phone and the monthly goods we can buy in bulk. Any other shopping we need in between shops, he gets. Naturally, he pays for his cars, road tax, etc, etc as i dont drive. It's a good arrangement that suits us both, as he also earns an awful lot more than i do. And i can manage what i pay with what i earn. Evenings out and holidays, he pays for as he's kinda old fashioned that way. I think you really do need to sit with your partner and tell him how you feel. There's a lot to be said for honesty. I know its not nice to bring everything down to money, but when you have a house to run, it does need to be cut and dried so there's no arguments. Tell him him bluntly you dont think its fair you're paying the majority of the bills, when he earns more than you, and that there has to be more of a 50/50 split. Resentment festers, so have it out.

With us, all our money goes on bills and rent and stuff then if there is something we want like a treat or something then it doesn't matter who moneys it is.

This is a thorny problem.
A bill is a bill, is a bill.
Who pays the household insurance?
Who would benefit if one of you passed away?
Who pays for transport?
use your womanly guile, and perhaps loose your purse for a few days, and see what happens then

Very tricky! money umongst friends/family/partners always seems to touch a nerve i'm afraid!! it does seem like your paying more? not sure how much your rent but its gonna bug you as he earns that bit more so........the only way is to write it all down & your gonna have to split it right down the middle so you know your not getting the rough end! if he dont like it then he finds another who'll put up with it!!

We put our money in the pot, pay the bills and divide the remainder, not forgetting to save some first if possible.

Just sit down and make a list of all the incomings and outgoings and tell him it needs to be split down the middle. I paid the majority of bills when I was living with my partner but I just used his cash card as and when I needed it. The relationship needs to be equal but if you are paying more each month then tell him and say either he takes on more or he has to start giving you money every month to help tide you over. If you can't sort this now then it will eat away at you and start affecting the relationship :-)

my parents have this totally but its like been sorted. my mum uses her money to buy all the groceries and my dad does all the bill paying. its a good strategy. ur husband needs to act like a gentleman

What about good old fashioned marriage.

It has worked for me for the past 26 years and both me and my wife have our hands in each others pockets without neither of us complaining about unfairness.

Where there is no commitment don't expect fair dealings.
