It doesn't have to cost money if you don't want it to. Unless you need a permit or something in your neighborhood. Get a table from storage, put some items you don't need anymore, get paper write the price on it and stick it to the item, ta da! You've got a yard sale! Oh and you need to advertise. You can but cardboard from Home Depot or any of those stores and hang up some signs around town. Or you can use your own material. Good luck! |

What a good idea.
Be prepared for your sale.
Go to the bank and have $50 in ones $50 in fives.
You will get a lot of 20 dollar bills
ADVERTISE in the newspaper. - or else you'll be depressed when no one shows up.
Put signs in street corners with arrows - list big items if you have room on your sign.
Wake up early - garage "sailers" can show up before the crack of dawn
Get a table with a calculator and a little notepad and a chair
Have some music - quiet seems to bother people
A pot of coffee is a big plus - put it on your signs

Check with your local council for regulations concerning yard sales in your area. I'm in Australia, and here, it's free. However, you might need to pay to put an advertisement in the newspaper classifieds.
If having a yard sale, make sure you have plenty of friends or family members on hand, to keep an eye on shoppers. Sometimes people use yard sales to 'scope out' a house before they burgle it, so keep the sale confined to the front yard, and perhaps borrow a friends dog for the back yard, to alert you to anyone sneaking away.
You should also have a large number of plastic shopping bags available for people to carry their purchases, and also enough change to run your own til.

If you make your own signs, post them around the neighbourhood a week before and then the answer is no. Make sure you have stuff people would want to buy or you will spend the day bored and poor!
mind you will need some cash to make change such as nickels, dimes and quarters with some toonies and loonies but it does not have to cost anything but some people buy advertising and fancy signs that is all. |

I never got a permit or license to have a yard sale and no one has ever asked before. I would just check with your HOA if you have one. They can have restrictions. |

no you make money at a yard sale, you just set up tables in your yard and either let people make offers or you write the prices on the items. Letting people make offers is the best way to sell the stuff fast. |

If you live in a small town i wouldn't worry about getting a permit but in larger cities police are more likely to stop and check. Other than that it doesn't cost a thing! |

Depends on your local regulations. Call city hall and ask whether or not a permit is needed and at what fee. If there is no fee, it's free to have a yard sale. You can make signs pointing the way to your sale (check regulations for this too), or even advertise in the local paper for nominal fee. If that doesn't work, you can always eBay! Good luck. |

most local newspapers offer free classified ads for yard sales under a certain size and you may wish to spend a few dollars on cleaning and price tags but other than that, mrs. lincoln, it's free. as for whether it is tax-free, you may wish to consult a tax accountant or the irs website. |
