jrh | Financially stressed ... need advice??!!? |
Ok, I feel stressed!! My fiance is the main income at our home. I stay at home with our 8 month old and recently started selling Mary Kay products to make some extra money, while still being able to stay home with our daughter! We have approx. $4000 dollars to pay in credit...none of it is late payments, but its alot to pay, and its mostly from when we just moved from the east to central US... soo...what can i do to pay this stuff off but not feel broke!! I mean i know thats stupid, but its starting to get to me and my fiance, because we never have money to do anything..we live paycheck to paycheck and still cant get out of credit card debt!!! UGH Please give me advice what should i do?? |

Make a budget, using past bills and records to estimate your costs. The first try won't be perfect but adjust it as needed. From this you should be able to see exactly how long you will need to get out of debt and you will automatically start saving wherever you can as the savings affects are so obvious. Also, even if (according to the budget) you know you won't be able to get out of debt for awhile still you won't mind as you will see the progress, however slowly it is coming. You also will have a plan and be in control and therefore probably won't be nearly as stressed.
On a more money saving front - maybe you could transfer teh debts to a credit card with a low starting interest rate which allows balance transfers (low rate for 1 year or so). You'll probably have to pay 3% to transfer the balance to this card but if you are paying 20% now it won't take long to make that money back.
Hang in there. Its tough but you are still handling everything and really working at your situation. You're alot more together and alot better off than many. |

$4000 is not bad at all. Make sure you are paying more than the monthly minimum or it could take about 20 years to pay off the credit card. Make sure you don't add any money on the credit card. Negotiate a lower interest rate with your credit card. When you call ask to speak to a supervisor and inform them that you have been offered another deal. They will usually lower your rate right then and there. As for living paycheck to paycheck that is going to happen for a while until you remove your debt. I would also suggest a part time job while your fiance is at home with your daughter. Use all of that money to pay down your debt. It will go quick. |

$4000 is not an unmanageable amount of debt. I suggest the following course of action:
1) Budget. Figure out how much money you can spend, per month to down your debt after taxes, rent, food, and all the necessities.
2) Negoitate. Talk to your credit card lender about lowering your rate. If they won't play, search for other credit cards that will give you a great rate on balance transfers.
3) Pay it. As fast as you can, pay it down.
4) Use cash. Don't use a credit card unless you can pay it off, in full every month. Otherwise, use the ATM to take out your budgeted spending money every week, and leave the card in a box that has been welded shut.

If you are paying a high interest rate on your CC then try to negotiate for a lower one, or switch to a no interest for 6 months card, transefer the balance, and pay it off ASAP. Also, look in your local paper for free or cheap stuff to do. You may not have money to eat in a restaurant, but you can make dinner and go have a picnic. Also, make it a game to see how low you can get your bills each month. If your electric billis usually $100, try to get it down to $80.00. If you normally spend $400 on groceries per month, try to only spend $300, which will require you to become a bit inventive with the recipes. Even if you can only save $5 here and there, it adds up. |

It is tough to start out in a hole. First thing would be is to make sure things don't get worse.
1. Stay healthy - eat healthy, don't delay seeing the doctor if you don't feel well, stop smoking, etc. It is tempting not to see a doctor or dentist to save some money - but you will pay much more in the long run. This goes for the baby especially.
2. Maintain your health insurance. Hope you have it.
3. Stop charging - easy to say - but really make an effort to change your habits regarding charging.
4. Cut down dinning out. Treat yourself to breakfast out not dinner and a drink. And don't drink -
5. Cut back on clothing, getting nails done, jewelery, convenience foods, - if you are doing such things
6. Gifts - until you are out of debt give each other gifts that are more practical rather than frilly. Not for all occasions but there are a lot of gift giving days thanks to american marketing. Also no Hallmark cards - put your heatfelt thoughts on paper and save the 4.95.
7. Figure out the get out of debt plan. e.g what are the goals for each quarter of the year until you are debt free. Mark the progress and occasional set back. Progress will make you feel better. Set a goal to reduce the debt by 50 or more a month.
8. Don't get the baby every toy. You want them to look cute but they won't remember whether they had 5 or 15 toys. Ever see a tot get a gift and play with the box? Use your imagination - time with mom and dad will be worth more than extra toys.
9. You will need to treat yourselves once in awhile or you will go nuts. Just keep it reasonable and plan it. A dinner out, byob and have ice cream at home.
10. Getting a job with an 8month old is hard. Can you babysit someone else's baby while you mind yours? If so, put most to pay debt and some to have fun.
11. Watch fees, you should have free checking with no minimum balance.
Hang in there you are doing the right thing and you will hopefully get out of debt and get this monkey off your back. |

If it's multiple credit cards, start with the highest interest rate, and focus on paying as much on that one as you can each month (even if it's ten extra dollars). While you pay this one off, pay the minimum payments on the rest. Once you pay that first one off, move on to the next highest rate. This method was recommended by our financial planner... We did it, and met with great results.
Ways to save money:
-Coupons!!! You'll be amazed how quickly the savings add up, especially if you frequent a store that will double or triple them. Don't like clipping them? I bid on them on Ebay.
-Cruise Control. Saves on constant accel and decel, gives better gas mileage.
-Adjust the thermometer. Two degrees lower (in winter), and two degrees higher (summer) can save you about 5-10 % on your energy bill.
-Insurance. Consider raising your deductibles to lower your payments.
-Household expenses. Do you watch all your cable channels? If not, you can switch to a smaller package and save $$. Do you use all your cell phone minutes? Again, a smaller package can save you money. This would also apply to your home phone, and long distance.
Those are just a few ideas. You can google for a ton more ideas on how to save money.
Good luck! |

Here is the key thing to remember... You have more rights than the creditors! I am one of 4 owners in a credit repair company called Debtbusters911. There are a lot of options out there. One thing is that you have the entrepreneurial spirit, that's AWESOME!
You have two quick choices. 1) contact you're creditors and make them work with you to lower your APR. and cut you a deal to repay a percentage of what you owe. HOWEVER MAKE SURE THEY PUT "PAID IN FULL" on your credit reports.
2) Make more money! It's awesome that you are doing Mary Kay.. However if you want more $$ MY company is always looking for independent Reps. We pay $250.00 for every client you get.
