Do events - events are much better then selling things. I am organizing a Dance-A-Thon right now to raise money for United Way. But you don't even have to go that big - do a spaghetti dinner with a talent show or something like that.

Candy and magazine sales--the type your school children participate in--are much more profitable fro the candy and magazine companies than the school. When someone at my work collects for these, I always ask if I can donate cash instead of buying some horrible holiday merchandise or candy. I would rather have 100% of my money go to the charity instead of 10% or less.
