Giving out sort code and account number?
If I give someone my bank sort code and account number can they use that info fraudulantly or take money from my account?

'Dr Greene'
Yes, it's more than enough information to get money from your account.

Only give them to people you trust.

BSA
Don't give anyone your information unless you have to. The sort code is the bank's account, each bank has one, and anyone can get it by just calling the respective bank, as for your account number, that's more complicated. Theoretically they can use it fraudulently, depends what kind of person gets your information.
In other words just be very carefull!!!!!!!!
Never reply to an e-mail coming from your financial institution requesting some kind of information. Contact them directly to avoid scam.
Good luck!

frenchy
yes they can , you must never give you bank info to anyone , massive WARNING dont do it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

chinmaylikesyou
if the back is not very strict in their procedures, they can get money out of your accounts. Most banks make small lapses here n there. better to be safe than sorry

dont give it out in 1st place

if you are giving you details out for net or phone shopping make sure you check your account regularly and flag up any annomolies with your bank immediatly! I've given mine on the internet a few time and even with "reputable companies" problems have occurred but my bank has always sorted them out for me.

yes they can, specifically using the internet to buy things.

charlietooo
Not without further information. If you gave them a cheque, it would contain your bank's sort code and your account number etc.

MISS ******
I would be really careful who you gave those details to.

There's not really that much that someone could do with just the acocunt number & sort code though- they would need more details than that (full name of account holder/s).

I suppose they could set up a direct debits etc.

Be careful!!!

The only people who should be able to take money from your account with this information are those with authorised by BACS to make direct debits - and they have to give it back if you haven't authorised the payment. However, if someone has your account details and your name and address, they can impersonate you and use your bank details to buy things.

Beg to differ Muggle but they can use it. Fraudsters are pretty hot at the moment on altering cheque micro-lines. They know exactly where to bank them to initiate a fraud.

The good news is you bank should stump up the loss if you are targeted. But never give out your bank details to someone you don't know is absolutely bone fide.

Never give account number and sort code to unknown people. Some miscreants call for your bank details through internet.Don't give.Your bank will never call such information through internet, they will write by post only.Internet data is unsecured.Don't give credit card particulars also. There are methods to fraudently withdraw money, identity theft etc.Your bank account is your personal secret ,keep it secret always.

yea

They can be it would involve a lot of hard work.

I use it all the time on eBay for accepting payments by Bank Transfer. You give out more details when you send a cheque, however, this contains a lot more info such as your signature!
You are at more of a risk sending a cheque than giving out these details.

A lot of people on eBay post these details openly on their auction pages and I for one have never had a problem with it.

muggle
I work for a bank and no, they can't really use it for much to be honest. They could easily get it from your trash if they really wanted it. It's things like your log on if you have internet banking they're really after....

I've worked for 2 banks for a long time and in all that time we have never told people NEVER give out your details. In the end, if you don't feel safe doing it, don't do it!
