HELP!!! I'm an Impulsive/Over spender, how do I get over that to save money?
I plan on purchasing my first home next summer, but I need to save up for the down payment. In order to do that I need to stop spending money. What are some ways to do it. Anything that's worked for you?

Put a big sticker over the front of your debit/credit cards. It should read "Your First Home???" That way you'll think of it everytime you try to spend anything.

Random thoughts...

Pay yourself first. If practical, set up another account and have your employer issue two direct deposits. Or make that deposit whenever you deposit your paycheck. Right then.

You "buy your down payment" just like you make any other purchase.

Also, you need to stop spending money. Spend some time figuring out your real budget. Find out where your money goes. For example, if you spend a lot on clothes, limit your purchases to a fixed amount each month. At the end of that month, whatever you had left goes to your down payment fund.

Don't buy anything on a credit card for the next year. Cash only.

Don't tempt yourself - just don't go anywhere that you would spend money. If you go to the mall "just to look around" you'll probably end up buying something.

Put your credit cards in a bowl of water. Put the bowl in the freezer. If you need them, you can get at them --> but not quickly!

If you want to buy something, wait 6 months. If you still want it, buy it. By then, you'll have forgotten 99% of the things "you just had to have".

Good luck buying your home!

Me, I put my # in an envelope. Then I put the envelope in this jewellery box that I have. The jewellery box is in the box that it originally came in. The box is in my room. I could put it in something else yet & prob even something else. If you put your $ in a place that's not very accessible I think that you'd find that it's easier to not touch it. (works for me)

Maybe you should put your $ in a bank that you don't usually deal w/ & put the debit card away you could save more $. Esp if you put it in a savings acc't you'd be saving more.

OR, you could put your $ in to a ... forget what it's called but you usually need $500 to put it in there. You leave it in there for a whole yr. After that whole yr you can take it out. If you take it out b/f that yr, then they charge you a lil bit I think. Wish I remembered what it was called...

Maybe you could put your $ in to someone else's acc't. Someone who you trust w/ your $ tho. I'm saving $ that's in my bf's name. The acc't is his but the $'s mine. I have access to the card tho. I mean, I have it cuz it's my $. In your case you might just wanna give that card to the person whose name it's in.

Maybe every time that you spend cash you can put the change away. You could put it in a bank & once you have enough change in there, you can get rollers @ the bank & then start putting your change in to rollers & put them in to the bank :) I have nearly $75 in change (toonies & loonies) getting there anywayz.

Good luck !!! :)

There are really some wonderful 12 step programs that are for different compulsive behaviors. They are available both in the local community and on-line. There is wonderful support from fellow human beings who care about you and what you want to accomplish. Most groups meet either weekly or monthly and are self-supporting. People if they desire contribution a dollar or so in the basket that is passed.

Out of sight, out of mind. It is the same principle I use to stick to a diet - if I don't bring the food in the house, I can't eat it. What I mean is, set up a checking account and a savings account with a bank that allows online account transfers. First, set up accounts to pay all bills online so you don't see cash. Have your paycheck direct deposited into checking, then immediately pay all bills that are due for the week/2 weeks, depending on when you get paid, and transfer the rest into savings ONLINE, leaving just enough to use your debit card for gas, say $20.00 for the week. Allow yourself ONE $20.00 bill in your wallet to cover emergency necessities - like if you have to run out and buy pantyhose. Keep the cash for groceries IN THE ACCOUNT and use your debit card at the checkout. Again, do not allow yourself to see cash. Pretend you don't have the savings account; pretend your checking is all you have. Keep doing this, and you will stop spending and start saving money. Put a picture of a house/whatever IN YOUR WALLET where your money goes to remind yourself of your goal. Like dieting and putting a picture of a slim you on the fridge and not bringing junk in the house, it will work slowly but surely and when you start seeing results you will be motivated. Take it from a woman who doesn't have a car payment and has over 20% equity in my house now and I'm only 34.

-Use coupons and shop only when it is double or triple coupon days at grocery stores

-Do not carry your credit card to places where you do not need it or might use it impusively (like the mall)

-Write down everything you buy

-Don't allow yourself access to money by directly depositing paychecks into savings/checking accouts

-reaserch before you buy expensive items

OK, here it goes:

STOP using your credit card. When a credit card is used your not even noticing the money disapperaring. To effectively stop spending you need to set up a weekly budget on how much you will spend weekly. Then make a list of items you must have (like food, etc) All other items like clothes or shoes will have to wait until later.

Then, withdraw your budget weekly amount from the bank Monday morning in the form of CASH. ONLY use cash for all of your purchases that week.

Studies have shown that when people pay soley with cash they spend far LESS because you see the money physically leaving your hand (a stack of 4-5 $20 is sad leaving your hand). Trust me this works. Try this for a week, and i gaurnetee you will save more and spend less.

Also, try to pay off those credit cards and don't fall behind on any payments. Best of luck.
