i know its insane..no one can live off 6.50 an hour..if they raised minimum wage i bet the crime and drug rates would drop a lot... people hustle to make money and afford to live..its the only thing they can do...our government is crazy |

You are not expected to either live on or get rich on $6.50 per hour. It simply allows you to survive. If you want more money either work harder in a more difficult and better paid job, work harder by getting a part time job or increase your qualifications. |

$6.50 an hour is only a starting point. Add a little ambition and hard work, and life is what you make of it. |

They don't.
You are expected to START at $6.50 an hour, then work hard and/or get educated and move up in the world.
People who stay at minimum wage are the people who never take their jobs seriously, call in all the time, refuse to do "extra" duties and are generally a pain in the butt. There are no dead end jobs, just dead end workers. If you work at one place for a couple years and it sucks, you can take your experience and go work somewhere else to get better pay.
That's the way it is supposed to work. I worked 2 different minimum wage jobs at the beginning of my career ($2.85 an hour, then the raise to $3.15) I did not stay at that wage for very long. No secret to moving up, just hard work and a good attitude.
Try it, it works. |

Who are "they"? You aren't supposed to get rich making minimum wage. And when I was growing up, minimum wage was $3.25 an hour, and we were lucky to get anything more than that. If you waitressed, you got paid even less because they figured that you would make it up in tips. The idea is that you should make minimum wage while you are getting some sort of education or learning a trade that will enable you to make more than minimum wage. And also, you should not have kids unless you are married so that there are two incomes to support them. |

Is your family healthy? So you wake up each morning and see the sunrise? Do you have freedom?..Then you are rich.
As far as money- work..work some more and a 2nd job if you need to. Train yourself to live within your means- get a better education in something that interests you- and look for what you want to do. |

Ermmm.... that is exactly why one should be motivated to study hard to learn a valuable craft or skill. It is the quest for a better life for ourselves and our families that drives us to better ourselves, and in the process, our community due to ones increasing ability to contribute on multiple levels. |

This is poverty level. On this you are expected to maintain a poverty level lifestyle. What are you complaining about? At least you are at poverty level and not totally homeless. |

Yeah it sucks but you just have to be ambitious and find something better. |

You are NOT expected to survive on 6.50 an hour. It is only meant to get people started on their way to making a living and contributing to society. You should get tired of making so little and want to make more so it will force you into getting more training, accepting more responsibility, etc, which will in turn lead to more opportunities, better paying jobs. |

I´ll trade jobs with you any day... I´m from Mexico, and believe me that here are worst scenarios... |

You can't. But employers aren't worried about that. Most of them are discontinuing health care as well. Remember, only the strong survive. |

yeah it's ridiculous but that just means you have to get another job. |

Even most of the poorest Americans have food, clothing, shelter, and even modern luxuries like cable TV, cell phones, and cars.
Also, there is a FREE education system available for every child/teenager in America. In addition, there are FREE libraries where you can educate yourself (if you didn't take advantage of public school and/or you can't afford to go to college and don't qualify for financial aid).
$6.50/hr is more than enough to live on--especially if you work more than 40 hrs per week and especially if you live in the South, Midwest, or in a more rural area. I don't think you should be satisfied with that, but there are plenty of ways to make more money than that and plenty of ways to reduce your expenses (and if you really don't think you can lower your expenses then move somewhere with no state income tax and a low cost of living like TX or FL). |

You have to accept or forget it. This society is like that and going by market rate. The boss is always great and customer is always right. Agree ? |

I used to work at a bank and I made that much. It sucks so I stayed for about a year and then used my experience to go somewhere else to make $9 then stayed there for 2 yrs and took that experience to my current job which I can survive on. You have to claw your way up and never stop looking. |

that wage is more for students |

Get training through your company or your state to learn a skill that will get you a better paying job. Go to college - you'll get grants from the government to pay the way. |

people who make that much must not have experience but it does suck |

I make hardly anything at this moment in time.
I absolutely refuse to accept this for the rest of my life.
That is why I am going back to college to earn my degree. I am going to make more than enough to get by. |

Wow Becky, can't believe some of these answers (i.e. Svetlana and Aumharan), shows an awful lot of ignorance on their parts. Retodd has it right.....if our congress cared about the people who are forced to accept a job for $6.50 an hour (I used to make $70,000.00 a year, today....I make 7.00 an hour) they would refuse to take pay hikes, they would want every U.S. Citizen to enjoy the same retirement, benefit package and pay scale plan that they work under. They do not care, the rich continue to get richer and the poor, poorer. The middle class is losing ground and slipping in to the poverty level. It is not from lack of people wanting to excel, work hard. The corporations that are abandoning U.S. soil for cheaper labor, resulting in loss of jobs for U.S. citizens to produce a cheaper product is a huge contributor to the job losses. Congress put in a bill to increase minimum wages in the U.S. but they stacked the bill that made it undesirable for the democrats to even want to vote on it. Trickery, bribery at its very best. No we cannot survive on $6.50 an hour and those out there who believe that we are lazy, uneducated are wearing blinders to the bigger picture! |

"They" (our lawmakers) have no idea what $6.50 is even worth. Most of them grew up fabulously wealthy (inherited money accounts for most of the wealth in America, by the way), and never had to worry about where their next meal was coming from or how they were going to make rent. Money was always there and they always got what they wanted.
Many of them also believe that the poor are in the position they are in because they are either stupid or lazy or both. So what do they care if you can live on $6.50 an hour or not. In their minds, you should be punished for being poor. Blaming the victim helps to keep them from evaluating their own lives and the role they play in this country. |

Maybe you should have thought about that when you dropped out of school or did your sociology major. Yeah that's exactly what we need just like here in Canada...A minimum wage raise for all the dumba$$es who couldnt go through school and work hard to get a real education. |
