Camilla the First | Has anybody here had any dealings with Capital One? |
I had an arrangement with Capital One to pay the minimum charge whilst I was ill - they added every single charge to my account during this time. I have tried in vain to get some explanation from them but now I just get abusive threatening phone calls from them. So in effect I could not catch up with payments and extra charges. All other creditors were understanding and actively helped me. I know I have to pay something and have the address of their Head Office. Any advice please? I would be most grateful |

Hello, we had alot of dealings with them and it was an nightmare. We were late with paymnts and we thought it was fraud they didnt help at all. we have the address for there head office somewhere i will dig it out for and send u another answer. we had the threatning phone constantly everyday and even on a sunday at 8am, it was like living in hell. At the end on it we paid it all off and we then got another ketter from there debt collectors saying we owe them £3 my partner went absolutly mad and we then still got phone calls of them. its over now and we are so glad. i promise i will dig the address out for u and let u no. i cant really advice you anything cus we struggled all the time with them. |

My partner had a bad experience with them too. Knowledge is power, know your rights. The first thing to do is dispute the extra charges in writing to the head office, listing any calls you made and any verbal agreements.
The next thing to do is to chop the card up and return it to them, I would always recommend turning credit card debt in to a loan, your bank can help with this - usually the interest is half what the card charges.
If you can, pay off what you owe less the charges and write again - I had to do this with all my debtors - nothing works like a letter.
Never underestimate your bank either, the attitudes have changed they do actually help.
Finally, never take financial advice from someone who is broke, as you will end up broke. (I am not broke so you can trust me!)
Hope this works out well for you. |

i had the same kinda problems with them! i gave up in the end, explained the whole situation to my bank and got a loan from them, for just over the amount Capital One were asking for, paid it off, cut up the card, cancelled the account, and since have had no problems paying off the loan, which by the way has a lower interest rate as well! ;-) Hope you get it sorted before it really mucks up your financial situation! |

I have had my worst experiences with Capital One,
Different credit card companies have different attitudes and Capital One seems to be one of the least flexible.. I think because charging represents a lot of income to them..
A couple of things they do and I personally think should be against the law.
1. It is possible to not authorise credit cards behond the credit limit, but they will allow you to do it and then charge an over-limit fee. So they allow you to go £10 over the limit then charge £20 for the privilage.
2. You are £5 under your credit limit and upto date with payments however they apply interest you get charged for being over the limit.
3. Generally charging more than the amount you are over the limit.
4. I think credit card charges to should be converted into APR, as my wife when she first came to UK got a low credit limit card of £200, from Capital One, she was close to her limit, she was one day late with a payment, this took her over the limit she was charge £40 or £50 ( I cant remember) for the mistake. So combined with the interest for credit of £200 she was charged £55 per month equivelent of 300%+ if it was interest. I think there should be a cap on this percentage. Loan sharking after all is illegal.
This would highlight to cusomers the true cost of the credit and how much profit is being made.
5. A previous answer said "know your rights" why not make it compulsary to print your rights on the credit card bill, in big print. |

I had a similar problem. I got my first credit card from Capital One, and the credit limit was only $300. Needless to say, now I owe them almost $800. They make no effort to work with you, even when you are making the minimum payment. Good luck, and I hope everything works out for you. |

Get your money back from these criminals. You sound like a good customer you even phoned them to tell them about your problem and yet they showed no mercy. Phone them and ask for the whole amount they charged you for late payment and for being over your limit. If they refuse write a letter asking for your money. If that fails go to the following links they are free to join they tell how to get your money back. There are also templetes of letters you can copy and fill in your details on these sites. I am assuming you are in the UK I am not sure about the procedure in other countries.

I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THEM ! They are horrible !!
Let me tell you just 2 stories...:
Capital one actually charged me double for one charge we made paying our distributor for our business. The total was around $4,000 and when the statement came they had taken it a TWICE ! I called them on it an they said it wasn't their problem and no they didn't do that. Well I proved IT was them by going through our distributor and it was finally dropped.
NEXT : I had $2000 extra one month due to the sale of an auto. I wanted to send it in towards a second auto we had financed through them @approx. $250.oo a month. This financing was an "auto withdrawl" from our checking so I never had to write a check, they simply took their $250.oo each month, no problem... UNTIL I sent in the $2000. Well good gawd the next month they didn't do their scheduled auto withdrawl, I thought nothing of it for I had just sent them $2000 and figured perhaps they needed to do extra calculating, whatever. I planned to call the next month if it wasn't on that statement. Before that statement came, I received a call from them demanding that I send them some money, saying I haven't paid for two months now. For some reason they overlooked the agreement we had made to do auto withdrawl AND THE FACT that I sent them $2000 extra just two months earlier!!!!
To make a long story short I told them off, paid them off immediately and cut off all ties! I have never been treated so bizarre and rudely in all my life! I have an impecible credit score in the 800's, and they were treating me like I was a criminal. I will never do business with them or any subsiderary of them again... I have asked others and they have said the same. I will continue to do business with our local credit union which has treated me the way I SHOULD BE treated!
Do yourself a HUGE favor... stay the heck away from them till they either get new management or train the morons who already work for them properly! If more customers take their business else where perhaps they will get the messege! WITHOUT US as customers THEY HAVE NO BUSINESS!! Shame on them for how they have treated people ! Hopefully they will crash and burn soon! |

I havent had any problems (yet) but view them as bad lenders.
I have a credit card account with them and they keep sending me 'credit card cheque books', which attract a hellish fee if you use them. I know this and so have never used them, not once!
I was having a clear out the other day and found all TEN that they had sent in the space of 18 months, in an effort to get me to use them. Bad or what! |

Capital One were evil bast*rds to me when I was ill. As soon as I could I paid them of and sent back the card. I would never recommend them to anyone else.
There adverts are so full of lies too.
I would write to head office stating you had an arrangement, which you kept to, but they didn't, and that consitutes breach of contract and that you are prepare to make a revised offer to help clear the debt, but require them to withdraw all the charges and interest added as a result of the charges.
If that does not work write to them cancelling the account, telling them that you cannot afford to pay them back in full and that you can pay them £10 per month, if that's not good enough let them take you to court to get the money, they'll probably get £2.00 per week.
Capital One will already have ruined your credit rating by adding every last detail to your record - so it will take years to get credit agian, so letting them take you to court won't have much effect. |

I am also happy with them
like someone posted earlier a loan or transfer to a different card and cut up the capital one card |
