Curious
Has anyone filed bankruptcy on University of Phoenix?
I just got an associate's degree from the University of Phoenix. I am interested in going to a different school and I am getting some story from my financial aid counselor stating that if I withdraw now (I am in my first class in the bachelor's program) that "You will accrue a large balance on account if you withdraw now since you will not have completed the requirements for financial aid. Please take time in your decision because if a large balance occurs and no payments are made your account will go into collections."

Does this mean they are sending my money back to the government and I will owe the University? If so, can I file bankruptcy on the University? i know federal student loans aren't dis-chargeable via bankruptcy, but is a balance with a private university dis-chargeable? I used to take up for them but when she told me this:

"The University of Phoenix is an accredited private university, so we are going to be priced higher than some other schools, but the quality of education is much better than most schools. I would think that you would know that you would benefit from your education. We are still very reasonable priced compared to other state schools. You were made aware of the cost of the university before you started. I am not sure why you would have started if you were not certain you wanted to continue. I stressed to you the importance of not dropping classes and not meeting requirements and you stated you understood the ramifications. Please let me know what it is I can assist you with."

...I hit the roof. I told her the school I was looking at was half the price of UoPx and I get this BS. Sorry to ramble, but I am not a happy camper at the moment. Thanks for your help!
Additional Details
Ok, I get that student loans stick around for life. I am not dropping out in the middle of the semester or anything. I got my Associate's degree on May 2 (as in 3 weeks ago) and am in the 2nd week of my first bachelor's class. I thought I was done with the 2009-2010 school year, but I can't get a straight answer! I guess if I owe UoPx and make payment arrangements, can I still get financial aid for the other school?

Way
your financial aid could be forfeit if you are not in school. you have to pay for your classes in full if you missed the last "drop" date, in part if missed the middling drop date, you can drop classes at no cost up to the no cost date.

hitting the roof isn't wise. the counselor is basically not a counselor at all. she is a salesperson and she is trying to save some business. contact the actual financial aid folks (the servicing agency/bank) instead to verify the info. contact someone else at the school and verify the school side info (re drop dates, $$ penalties, et al)-- when you talk to the next rep, don't sound like you're haggling at the flea market. don't talk about how it is cheaper across the street. tell them you need to drop out due to some personal tragedy.

if you are stuck at uofph for the semester, take your classes and do a good job with them and start talking about how you might transfer those credits and start at the other cheaper online degree mill (opps, i meant to say accredited private university) next semester. the student loan people will keep lending to you and keep deferring payments as long as you are studying somewhere. the loans aren't tied to the univ of ph

You don't file bankruptcy ON anything or anyone. However, you already know student loans are not dischargeable. You were warned and you ignored the advice. Now you must repay the loans.
