Has anyone gotten charged twice for using an ATM different from your own bank?
I got 10 bucks out with a 2 dollar charge for using an ATM that was not from my bank. ok, no prob, right? I checked my statement online and they charged me the 12 dollars and then charged me another 2 dollars seperate from the 12 charge. what gives?

I don't get charged a fee for using an ATM that isn't my bank if I use another bank's ATM as I pay an monthly fee that waives all charges. If I use a private ATM, I get charged $2.00 only. This is how the owners of private ATM's make money. Many times these people have to pay a small fee to the owners of the property where the ATM sits, so they need to pass on this cost to you. Its the price you pay for convenience.

Its just another way to get at your money. Not all banks do it, but many do. Some banks, especially those with very few ATMs, will even reimburse you for the charges from the other bank. I always try to get money from my own bank if I know that I am going to be in an area not serviced by my bank. However that is not alway possible, then you are just stuck.

Your bank and the bank you took money from charge seperate fees.

joshuabergeron
Yes. I have been charged twice. I've done this only once and have never done it again.

Tate T
Yes, I get charged 2x. Once for using another out-of-network ATM that doesn't belong to my bank (this charge is from my bank) and another charge from the ATM owner (it can range anywhere from .75 to $5.00).

My bank will refund up to $6.00 per month in ATM charges but I still rack up a good amount anyway.

It's the cost of doing business. Nothing is for free anymore.

Yep, what everyone else has said is true. Next time you need cash, stop by a grocery store and buy a drink or something and just get cash back. That way you are avoiding all the fees.

A lot of times, the bank where you withdrew the money from will charge you a service charge, and your own bank will also charge you a service charge for having to send funds to that bank where you used the ATM.

Brett R
yeah that's happened to me before too. I was pretty mad, but there's really not a lot I could do about it without going to that ATM, finding the owner, and sending something in writing, etc. I ended up just letting it go

Yep, the ATM's bank charges you because your card is not from their bank. Then, your bank charges you because you used an ATM from a different bank. That's why I always use an ATM from my bank.

Holy crap yes! I withdrew $ 40 from an atm @ the casino---On my bank statement it showed a $ 5 service fee from the casino and then a $ 3 service fee from my bank---I will never do that again

Depends on the banks.

Some banks charge you if you check your balance using an ATM that is not part of their native network.

So if you ask for your balance and then withdraw, or vice versa, you will be charged for two transactions.

Some ATM operators also charged you for using their ATMs.

It's obnoxious. The bank you take it from charges you, and then your bank charges you as well. That's why I never do that.
