What you need to do is work on a budget. Allow yourself a bit of money each pay to your mum, then lay-by the phone that you would like and allow that into your budget. If you ask your mum and have trust in her then you know that you will be able to do what you want to a certain point. |

Get a less expensive phone that is still functional...earn as much as possible to pay your mom back...then focus on saving for the phone you really want. Your FIRST responsibility is your debt |

Step one is learn the difference between NEED and WANT. You may NEED a phone that works. You WANT a phone with a lot of fancy features. You do NOT NEED a phone with a camera or internet connectivity. You need one that will make and receive calls and send and receive text messages and has voicemail. That's all. That is a $15 phone with prepaid airtime. If the distance is reasonable, walking won't hurt you, by the way.
So you now have over $30 toward the $150. Now pay the rest this summer. |

You don't NEED a $54 phone. If you really want a phone so that you can call people and get a ride then you will settle for a $30 one. |

You are 13 you don't need a cell phone. You certainly don't need a $100 cell phone. I bet you could find one for under $50. If you really need a better one then after you work this summer you can buy one. If you have to walk that is not a bad thing. Your parents are not your chauffeurs, so plan times to meet. |

Sounds like if you can't pay for the phone or the service you are not responsible enough or capable to have either. A cell phone is not a necessity |

$150? That's nothing, there's tons of people out there with over $50,000 debt. I'm sure if you talk to her she honestly won't mind, the main thing is that you pay her back. |

You need to research the difference between a "want" and a "need". |

First of all, you're 13. You don't NEED any of this stuff. When I was 13, cell phones didn't even exist and guess what..I'm ALIVE, WELL AND HAPPY! :) So.. you will be ok. It's really NOT that serious! |

It's spring time... try going door to door in your neighborhood, lawn work! wouldn't hurt to have yard tools and look ready to work. |

13 is a good age to start learning about personal finance. Having this happen now should help you when you are older.
Is sounds like your mom makes you take responsibility with your money. I say find a really low hour job to earn the extra money to get the phone

Your first responsibility is paying your mom back. Getting a phone is not that important. You can find other ways to get in touch with people when needed.
If you have the whole weekend, theres a lot of things you can do: Babysit, yard work, cleaning service, wash cars, etc.
Good Luck!!! |

I have two options for you ... one is to take the money you have and buy a TracFone, a pay as you go plan for emergencies. You'll soon understand the importance of limiting yourself to what an emergency is as you continue to buy cards at $20 each. Another option is take the $54 that you have an get a business license. Then apply for a Tax ID. Start your own business which will pay for the phone of your dreams. What are your skills? What are your interests? Those are the things to work to your advantage. Yes, even at 13 you can have your own business. Check out the library for books like "Fast Cash for Kids" by Bonnie & Noel Drew. Maybe you would like to make some kind of craft like garden flags or maybe you would prefer to sell existing products like books for teens or how about selling video games or cell phone accessories or ???. Some people don't like selling products and would prefer to offer services like running errands for the elderly or disabled, having story hours or puppet shows instead of babysitting to entertain younger kids for blocks or an hour or two. Some teens write newsletters and others wash cars, walk dogs, or set up computers. Think outside the box. Grab a few of the books on teen businesses and see what others have done for money. Don't copy the ideas... leave them in the dust!!! |
