go to the money shop in the high street they offer the lowest high street prices for cheque cashing.

You may be able to open a post office account as a starting point although im not sure if you can pay cheques into them or not. There should be somewhere in your area that offers a cheque cashing service for a small percentage but you would have to ring them and find out if this service could be used for large amounts.

You should be able to open a basic bank account at a post office or halifax card cash account or a nationwide bank

These are available for people with bad credit and they are extremely basic....but they allow paying in and direct debits out

chimp
well if you have a bad credit rating you can only open a basic bank account, we did with halifax or the co.op. they will except you where no other bank will, you then can pay the cheque into these. you will then have a card, but you cant overdraw on this account only take out the money you have available. i hope this info helps you out.

All banks and building societies should offer you a basic bank account by law.
Avoid Lloyds and Nationwide. They will only give you a cash card for their own machine.
Halifax, Co-op, Natwest, Yorkshire all offer a debit card with their basic bank accounts, so you can get cash back in the shops etc.
They all do a credit search, this defines what type of account they will give you. Things can be tricky if you are a bankrupt, but a few CCJs should be no problem.

alatoruk
nationwide. they will give you a flex-account, no cheque book, but cash point card and you can get counter cheques etc.

credit history isnt a problem because there is no overdraft facility on it. They gave me one only 5 days after I went bankrupt

post office cash account or one of the companies who cash cheques on high street. You could ask a friend or relative to help as you can endorse (sign) back of cheque and pay into their account better still ask the person who is sending cheque to put it in their name.

cash converters, take three usual types of id. they charge small % of cheque. but usually no problem. no need for ID second visit or thereafter.

Suzy
You can take the check to the bank where it was drawn and they will cash it for you.
