Many states have assistance programs. Also many of the utility companies will allow you to use a budget plan to evenly distribute the cost throughout the year...many offer hardship claims and assistance programs that have nothing to do with the state...

Call the utility company and see what they can do (many offer programs--if you ask)
Search google/yahoo "help pay utilitiy bill yourstate" (put name of your state in place of yourstate)

Good luck to you and I know it doesn't help, but realize you are not the only person/family faced with colder homes and no money.

Most Utility Companies have a budget plan that averages your usage over a year's time and then they set an amount that you pay every month. The amount does not change until they review it after a year. then they either adjust it up or down depending on your usage for that year. You are always notified when this happens. That way you know how to budget your expenses per month.
We use it and it really helps a lot.

I would suggest going to each utility company and see if they can arrange a payment plan with you. There are also a lot of agencies in your area that will give you a grant which in turn can be sent to your utility company. If this doesn't work, then maybe picking up a 2nd job will help reduce your costs.
