Scam!!
I received a similar check. Mine was to cover taxes on the winnings. We called the issuing bank and the check is a fake.
What they want you to do is wire them the amount before the check bounces. You will be out two grand and they will be on to their next victim.
Call the issuing bank - if the check is legit then cash it but DON'T send them a penny!! |

it's a scam.
False International lottery claims are usually associated with spam emails telling them they have already won a big jackpot in an international lottery that they never even entered. Yep, it’s far better than magic.
Their goal is to get your personal information and also get you to send them an up front fee to cover taxes, customs, wire transfers, and so on. You'll not only be a victim of identity theft in the coming weeks, but you'll be out any money you send them as well.
This is similar to the Nigerian 419 scam, promises of millions in exchange for a few thousand dollars in up front costs, money you'll never see again. Just remember that Lotto International or anyone else isn't going to mass mail you millions of dollars for a contest you never entered. These types of scams play on people’s greed and naiveté. I would avoid every international lottery or any email with the name lotto international on it.

Remember that no legitimate gambling company is going to pick someone out of the clear blue and give them a ridiculous sum of money.
On the contrary, there are some International lotteries, from which people from many countries, typically Europe, can enter. I couldn't find any of the traditional, legitimate international lotteries doing business on the Internet however. This is mainly because lotteries don't accept credit cards for tickets, as credit card fraud would be sky high. I guess gambling and fraud goes hand-in-hand, go figure.
Steer clear from international lottery claims! |

It's a scam. Don't cash it, don't send anyone any money. It's just a hoax. |

I haven't heard of this particular variation, but it sure sounds like a scam.
First, do you remember entering any international lotto? I don't know of a single lotto that awards prizes to people who don't even buy a lotto ticket.
Second, odds are they will ask you to send money, probably by wire, to that "international lawyer." Only weeks later will you find out that check is bogus and your bank will come to you and remove that money from your account or demand you make it good.
Play along with them if you want to, but under no circumstances send them any of your money for whatever reason they may ask. Also do not send them your bank account number, or else they'll drain it. |
