First gather all your bill and know how much you need to pay every month, that also including credit card bills. With credit card, you need to include the higher of minimum due OR the month interest accrued. Don't forget the auto insurance or any other insurance (or let's just say things you pay every six months or annually), and find the monthly amount for those bills. As for groceries and gasoline, you will need to start to see how much you need every month by tracking your spending. Now you are ready to total all the monthly amount required. Second, take your take home pay (after tax), and starting to subtract all the bills need to be pay. I hope is not a negative number. Okay, if you still have 15% of your income left, that is good. That means you live within your means. Save up all the 15% to a savings account. If you like to save even more than 15% of you take home pay, or you are negative after you deduct everything, start review your bills. Maybe your cell phone plan can cut down to $35 a month instead of $150 a month. Start to cut down the unnecessary stuffs. Start tracking your spending and know where your money is. If you owe more than one credit card, start paying off by focus on the highest interest rate first.
After you get a grasp of how to budget, start to look at bigger picture and focus on paying off your debts. Such as credit card debts... |

list all of your possible expenses. Then try to allocate your money in each of your expense. Your list must be arranged according to its importance. In that way, you will see which of your expenses are really important and which among those are not. hope this helps |

Pay yourself first. Right wen you get paid put 20% into a savings account and dont touch it. At the end of the year you will have $3,456.00 saved up. Then you can invest in stocks and that money if you leave it in stocks will be worth over a million in 30 yrs I garuntee. Just make sure you keep adding 20% for as long as you can and pick good stock companies like google.
In te meantime you will still be making $1,122.00 each month to help your parents and spend. Or maybe save even more at the end of the month. |

Always pay yourself first. That means saving for the future. Then obligations...parents, bills. Then disposable cash...money for incidentals, entertainment. Don't spend what you don't have (important life lesson). Charge cards are evil. Keeping one for emergencies is necessary in today's society...just don't keep a balance on it.
The fact that you are already thinking "budget" and "saving" is a great way to start a successful future.
Kudos for helping out with some family expenses also. |

For me, I draw up simple budget for a month to keep track of what I'm spending on. I'm putting some savings first before I spend:
http://finance.yahoo.com/how-to-guide/banking-budgeting/12832
Here is some information about money drains:
http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/103379/top-10-money-drains
This is to keep track how much you spend on under various types of expenses.

Basically, the Yahoo Finance is an informative site and a good place to get some answers.
For money making, I'm reading "Thou Shall Prosper" by Rabbi Daniel Lapin. It touches various aspect of life and I recommend it here to you. |

My suggestion is to immediately put 1/2 of your pay in savings.
That should leave you about $540. Then give your parents 1/2 of that to help with household expenses. With the remaining $270, use 1/4 of that each week for your own personal items, recreation, etc.
Someday you will be glad to have that savings! |

Next month keep a log of every single thing you spend money on - I mean everything. Then sit down and go over your notes and decide what are the exspenses you want to keep making and what are things you can do without. You have to know where your money is going before you can make decisions on where you want your money to go. Do you have financial goals? You are making a good amount of money and should be able to save a fair amount while you are in college so that when you graduate you have something to start your life with however saving for post graduation would be a financial goal - is that something you want to save for? You need to sit down and think and then see where your money goes currently and based on your thoughts then you can decide accuratley where your money should go in the future. GOOD LUCK and it isnt as hard as you think it just takes some forethought. |

The easiest way to budget is to make a list of fixed expenses with dates & times 1st. Take a piece of paper & on the left margin write the dates. Next to each date write down what you have every month (like 5th> Cell phone> $50) & so on. Then figure out what you have left over. Then write down what you spend on gas, food & other incidentals. Make sure you figure entertainment money ( coffee with friends or a movie ) then you have whats left each month. This system will help you always stay on top of your bills, help your credit stay good & you will know if you are getting into trouble & need to cut spending or get a 2nd job. If you make this list every month you will always know your finances. Computers are nice but actually writing it down helps many people retain it better in their memories. When you have extra expenses like you had to fix the car or a medical bill, this system will help you know what you have available & if you need overtime! Until you do this, you won't have a true idea on how much you can help the parents with. Good luck! |

i am kinda a lazy one, never make a so-call budget chart or what. "save some money!" keep that in mind, then you won't over spend it. One more thing kinda crucial: DON"T ALWAYS EAT OUTSIDE WITH YOUR FRIENDS. Trust me, they probably take you somewhere expensive hurt you budget, or probably push you to pay for it, maybe later they will treat you dinner, but the money you have spent never comes back. Eat alone sometimes. |

After years of tinkering with "budgeting" systems at home and for corporations, I've learned that a simple approach is best. I have two line items in my budget:
1. Savings/Investing
2. Spending
I first set #1 to a minimum of 10% and try to shoot for 20% and make that an automatic withdrawal from my main checking account each month so that I'm not tempted to not save this. This is the "pay yourself first" concept.
That leaves me with about 80% to spend. I just keep track of my spending and as I get closer to that 80% limit, I put the brakes on. I don't spend what I don't have. I often spend less than 80%, which gives me even more money to add to my savings.
I don't get too caught up on how much I'm spending on movies vs. restaurants vs. cleaning supplies. Doing that drove me crazy. I found that simply knowing my overall spending limit and where I was relative to that limit at all times works well.
Good luck. Keep up the good work in college. Investing in yourself is the best investment you'll ever make. Establishing a good discipline on savings, investing and spending will also serve you well over the long haul. |

Create a budget. http://finfo.com/budget is a free budget tool you can use.
List all of your income sources and all of your expenses. If you're spending more than you're making you can go down the list of expenses to see what you can do without. If you're still spending more than you're making, then you need to find other income sources.
Ideally you should save at least 10% of your income ($144). If you can afford to, the first thing you should do with that paycheck is to take that $144 and put it into a money market account like ING direct (federally insured and a good interest rate). This is something you shouldn't touch except for emergencies. If you think you might need to dip into your savings, create two different accounts. One account should be the emergencies only account, and the other should be your savings account that you can dip into when necessary.
If you end up using the budget tool I listed above you can also create an account with them (free, they don't spam) so that you can save your budget and check it/make changes whenever you want.
Hope that helps and best of luck! |
