The Swiss Franc has been a remarkably stable currency for many years, with no strong economic imbalances to dent its performance. There is no inflation, house prices fluctuate very little, personal savings are good, the economy is strong, per capita GDP is high and the country scores well as a place to do business.The Swiss Franc has appreciated significantly against Sterling in the last three years, from around 40p to over 60p. It has also appreciated against the Euro, and whilst not at the heights it was against the dollar that it was last year, the underlying trend has been of appreciation. I see little reason for a run on the Swiss Franc, but there could well be further pressure on the pound, either as result of government policy to use inflation to reduce debt or to stimulate export-led recovery, or as a direct result of the structural imbalances in the economy. Whether this will manifest itself in the next three months, I do not know, but the higher probability is that the Swiss Franc will appreciate against Sterling rather than the other way round. |
