How can I be money smart?
I don't really know any other way how to word the question haha.

I'm almost 15 and I'm terrified of the thought of being in debt or struggling with money when I'm older! How can I prevent myself from getting in debt and what is a good way to save money?
Thank you!

First of all, make a commitment to save 10% of everything you earn. Have a special bank account that gets good interest and put your special savings there. Get a good account with low fees. Shop around at multiple banks til you find the account you're looking for.

Now, don't be scared of debt. Debt is a great tool. It's just that some people are cretins and they use debt to buy the wrong things. Only use borrowed money to buy a house, or good quality shares, and even then, try to get the lowest interest rate you possibly can.

You can have a credit card, but only use it to build a credit rating. Buy something like groceries or fuel each week with the card, then repay it immediately with internet or phone banking. Pay an extra dollar, so that your account is in the black all the time. This will improve your credit rating. Never use the card to buy stuff you don't need, like new clothes or movie tickets or meals out. Only use it on essentials, and make sure you have the cash to cover the purchase.

When you are working, have your boss put at least 10% of your income into your special savings account, and the other 90% into your normal account. Do this over your lifetime, and you'll always have a stash of cash to rely on during emergencies, like if you need to buy a replacement car, or a fridge, or you need dental treatment immediately. Having an account for emergency savings has saved my **** numerous times. I cannot stress how important that is.

Always save up and pay cash for everything. Even cars. Save up and buy a secondhand car, and you'll save heaps.

You should make saving just 'a thing you do'. Have savings that are not earmarked for particular purchase. They are there 'just in case'.

When buying a house, you want the biggest deposit you can save, and borrow the smallest amount for the mortgage. If you ever have debt, like a mortgage, pay it back as soon as you can. That will save you thousands of dollars in interest. I have a mortgage and I'm repaying it in five years, not thirty. It is worth working a little harder now and paying the house off because in the future, I won't have a mortgage repayment, I'll own the house outright, and I will have saved myself over $100 000 in interest. Most loan payments are mainly interest. The longer you repay the loan, the more interest you pay.

Go to your local library and get some basic books out on personal finance. They will help you get to understand the dos and don'ts of money.

You should invest some money now before you turn 18. The longer you have it invested, the more you'll end up with. Just like the longer you pay a loan, the more interest you pay, the longer you have an investment, the more interest you get. Talk to your parents about it. If you can save a few thousand dollars, go to your bank and ask if they have a financial planner on staff. They will be able to help you.

Best wishes. You're smart to be so proactive at your age.

when you get a credit card..don't max it out. only use if for emergencies and never make minium payments for a long period of time...always pay off what you owe right away or in larger amounts. Try to get the lowest interest possible and keep good credit. Don't let bills go to the collection agency. how do you do that...but living within in your means. If you only make 20,000 a year only spend a 1/3 of that on rent or mortgage..same with a car.

Perhaps you can find a millionaire camp like this one http://www.millionairekidscamp.com/ somewhere near you. They are taught by certified financial planners.

When you turn 18 do get a credit card to build up your credit, but absolutely pay it off every month! Maybe just use it to buy gas then when you get a bill pay it off before you are charged interest. That way you build credit but you don't lose money.
When you go to college try as hard as you can to get grants or scholarships so you don't go into debt with student loans.
Don't finance a car; rather save your money to buy one.
Learn to plan ahead - delay gratification.

This doesn't sound like fun, and perhaps it is a bit hypocritical, but that's how it is :)
Good luck! And you are already in a good place since you are concerned BEFORE you get into any money trouble.

i think trying to start a budget would bea good idea

i am 35 with a husband and kids
i NEVER grew up with a budget
i wasn't rich (i wish!) but i just thought i 'knew' what i could afford

when i look at the money we owe now and the money we are wasting on interest on the credit cards it makes me sick!
blah!

so, my honest advice would be try to start a budget
look into what you should save and what you can spend (maximum)

i think the younger you start this, the easier it will be!

you are wise beyond your years if you are taking all the good advice and putting it into action

best of luck!

Remember you can't save money by spending, if you see something is reduced by half but you were never going to buy it in the first place you have still spent money on it, thus you haven't saved half.

Well, when I asked my grandfather how to save money he told me that lets say you have a hundred dollars and you want to save it and spend it...So you put $50.00 in the bank and you get to spend the other $50.00.

I hope this helps. ;)

Just stay out of credit card debt, that's what traps most people.

Well first, do good in school and go to college to get a good job so you can get a good income for the rest of you're life.
For now, you don't have to worry too much about saving cause you're only 15. Put half in the bank and keep half for yourself everytime you get money. Make sure you have money to help your parents with college fees.
And also try to get a part time job. The money is really handy and it builds up fast in the bank.

Great question. I have 3 recommendations for you.

1. For general money knowledge start listening to the Clark Howard radio show. He's a radio consumer advocate that is syndicated nationally, and he touches on all sorts of financial and consumer subjects at a beginner's level. He's also podcast on iTunes for free. I've linked to the site. Clark also has a great book called "Get Clark Smart: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Rich From America's Money-Saving Expert" The book is filled with great advice. It's not really a get rich book, but a use your money wisely book.

2. For setting up a practical savings plan, read "Automatic Millionaire" by David Bach. It's a very easy read and he'll fill you in on how to start saving easily and automatically. At 15, you may not be able to yet, but it's good knowledge for when you can.

3. For learning how to become wealthy, read "The Millionaire Next Door." This book was written by scientists who studied people who became wealthy from humble origins. They identified the patterns of those people that you can emulate. Nothing fancy. Just solid advice like living beneath your means so you can save and invest money.

All the books I've referenced are easily available at any public library.

Really though, listen to the Clark Howard show. It's easy, free and very informative. In 6 months you'll be a pro.

Of everything, the #1 tip is live beneath your means and pay yourself first. That means set aside a percentage of every dollar you make and save it. Do it first, then just live on the rest. 10% is a good figure. More is better though.

Don't get a major credit card untill you have a stable job, and when you do get one.. pay all your bills on time.. people usually get 2 paychecks per month.. save one of those paychecks in your savings account.. Don't splurge too much, don't over shop.. don't buy things you don't really need..

My husband and i just started doing this thing where my paycheck does not exist.. i put my whole paychecks in our savings account and we live off his paychecks.. everything we want and need is paid thru his paycheck, if we don't have enough, we don't buy it.. and we're doing fine and our savings is adding up.... with the way the economy is going you have to save each penny..

save da money in bank!

; rachelcullen.
when making money you could save like maybe 50% and the other 50% for spending purposes.

when shopping, compare prices before you buy something.

when shopping, think to yourself "do i REALLY need this?"

hope this helped. :)

Culver's minimum hiring age is 14 with a workers permit.

I called many stores because I am 14 looking for a job. This was the response they gave which makes me happy after looking for so long.

Find a local one go online and apply and go in store to apply or call and ask if they are hiring.

What I did was Google a bunch of business near my home and found their numbers using Google maps or their sites and I called and directly asked if they are hiring and what age do they hire at.

Try local grocery stores, pizza parlors, retail stores, fast food restaurants.

1. I say clip coupons all the time and buy sale items.

I once helped my family turn a $200 grocery bill into a $80 bill for scan and clipping coupons. trust me it is worth it.

2. Put all coins in a jar then cash them in.

3. Buy out off season clothes for cheap at places like plato's closet

4. research sales online

5.research the lowest gas prices in your area ( don't have to anymore)

6. have a set amount you put away if you have a job like 15%

7. set financial goals

Live by the day don't worry just chill out when you and I are older (I'm 13) It'll all be gooood!

I'd recommend saving as much as you can. I usually have my paychecks from work direct deposited, that way I don't have cash in hand to spend. It's all on my card.

Also, stay away from things that are unnecessary. Live simply. Getting a credit card, and a cell phone contract, and any other financial commitments are a pain in the butt. I still remember what my finances teacher told me: "Credit cards are not extra money, it's tomorrow's money." Boy was she right. I got 1 credit card so I could establish some credit and let me tell you it is the last card I will ever get.

Hello!
Look for sales, cut coupons, and sign up for emails at stores so they can send you promos and coupons.
Don't get store credit cards and try to only have one or two major cards. and only charge what's necessary like school books and for emergencies ,because $20 here $30 there really adds up.

For the time being, put all your cash under your mattress.
