$h!t . <33 | How can I cut back/stop spending money on stuff I really just don't need? |
I feel bad about spending all my money. I feel I should put some of it in saving, but being a teenage girl, I want to spend my money on accesories, shoes, clothes that I wear once. maybe twice. I just recently bought a "really cute stuffed dog" for $35. My parents give me most of my money, so I feel really bad on spending it on such stupid things. I try not to spend money when I go to the mall with my friends, but I always see stuff I "must have" and buy it, and that starts my shopping spree for the day. I can't just stop going places where I spend my money, because that is where my friends and I go. I don't want to have to stop going to the mall. I love going to the mall. So I don't want the answer, just stop going places where you spend money. I also don't want- Just don't bring your money. Then, I always end up begging my friends for money, and they give it to me. It's like I have a addiction to shopping. HELP ME PLEASE?!?! |

It's the feel-good factor of getting something you like that is so powerful. You could get a different good feeling by channelling some of your time into helping others - even look on it as a challenge - bring your friends on board, it would be good for them too - you could do it together, as a team - there are bound to be charities or organizations somewhere near you that would welcome enthusiastic volunteers.
You are a teenager, so haven't quite found the Real World yet - where grown-ups pay their own bills, and work to find the money. If you were to find a part-time job, you could be spending your own money...
And perhaps then you could buy something your parents would like, to thank them for their generosity all these years...
You are already aware that the spending is out of control. That is the first step in tackling the problem. Could you invert this into How Much Can I Save?
Good Luck!! |

I went through this... I spent every penny on clothes. Now I control myself... but i'm not a teenager anymore... I'm saving for my future now. I put 50% of my paycheck away and budget the rest of my money... so there is a certain amount of "fun" money but I can choose how I spend it.
Gotta be honest I miss clothes... and style. |

Don't ask a question and then tell us how NOT to answer it. Get a job; when you see how hard it is to earn it yourself, you won't spend it so freely. |

A $35 teddy bear is rather expensive. Did you really need this one?
I suggest that you set yourself a budget and stick to it.
Perhaps you can find out if there are poor families who are in need of clothes, food or toys for their children.
I bet that you would feel a lot better having spent your money on a more worthwhile cause. |

First part is to be aware of your spending. You can be further aware by seeing where you would be if you put the money into savings instead of spending it. Set a goal to save a certain amount by a chosen date... and have a reward for when you do reach that. Say take a percentage of that savings and then you are allowed to spend it on a new outfit or a trip you want to go on.
I use a budgeting program called CalendarBudget.com
I am able to look into the future on the calendar and see how much is going to be in my account. So it would be good for you to take 40% of what's given to you and put it into a savaings account. Give 10% to a charity to give back to people that could really use it (maybe see people that do have much less than you.... to encourage you to save so you don't ever end up in that situation). Then take the remaining 50% and use that as you wish... So you do have some spending money but able to save some at the same time.
Budget yourself and use the budgeting program to see when you will have enough money for that 1 item that you want.
Do share your goal with your freinds and your parents... have them see your progress and be excited with you. The encouragement always goes a LONG way. |

The habits that you develop now are going to follow you into adulthood. And, as an adult, the consequences are much more costly. I would suggest the following:
Everytime you get money, even if it's a dollar - save some of it!
Open up some type of savings, IRA or money market account to house the money you are saving. Over the years, you will have THOUSANDS if you do this.
Create some long term and short term goals. Maybe you can save up to buy yourself a car or something really nice. Don't waste money on small things. If you are going to spend, make it worth your time. |

Elaine is on to something - if you have to earn your money, you'll spend it less.
It's hard when you are young to control your impulses - heck, I'm a lot older than you and I have trouble still (but it better than when I was young)
Don't bring MUCH money - bring as much as you are comfortable spending, and leave the rest. Of course you will want some - for sodas and whatever - and you can focus that you don't need this stuff. It sounds like you are starting to feel it. At some point, those of us who like to shop, we realize that we have too much stuff - it's not fun anymore.
You could even check out a Shopaholics Anonymous group (yes, it really can be addicting) they will help you understand where some of these impulses come from.
And, be honest with your friends on days you feel "weak" Just tell them you are trying to learn to save and don't think you can control yourself if you go to the mall - many of them will probably understand (and probably know what it's like to spend too much and regret it later)
A last thought - if you leave the tags on things and don't use them, you can probably return them ... it's not nearly as fun as buying things, but they you get your money back (and it may let you think twice before you buy something else you don't need and may regret!)
Best of luck! |

Ok serious answer: If you find yourself in a situation where you found something that you really want, remember where to find it, give it a day or two and if you still feel that you still want to get it, then do so. But to really avoid spending unnecessarily, simple... Don't go to the mall and try getting a job at McDonalds, this way, you'll feel how hard it is to get money and much more spend it. |

you can tell your parents about your effort to save money, and probably agree on instead of handing you the money, keep most of it in a savings account that they'll keep for you..
if you can get a job, allot a percentage to 401k because it's like saving in a piggy bank that you can't break unless there's an emergency.. 10% is ideal, but if you can do 25% (i think that's the maximum), you'll be surprised with what happens after 5-10 years, at a time when you're still in your 20's..
research the internet on articles about 'how to stop shopping', there's a lot out there to help you more.. |

Unfortunately the two answers you don't want are the correct solutions to your problem.
My girlfriend has the same problem as you do, and she deals with it by setting aside a certain amount of money each month strictly to save - money she doesn't bring with her. That way, if she overspends, she forces herself to scrape by for the rest of the month. (Actually, I usually end up paying for her if she does that.) |

Start by telling your friend to never give you money. Even go as far to have them sign something saying they will never give you money for anything unless it's an emergency.
An emergency would be you are dieing or physically in need of help.
Next get a piggy bank or a jar or what ever and put 1/2 or more of any money you get in that jar. Make sure you cannot open the jar unless you break it. money can go in only. You can even give the jar to your parrents to hide on you
That way even if you fall to temptation you can only spend 1/2 or less of the money you got.
Finally it just comes down to will power. Wow I really want thoes shoes- tough. No you can't have them, no you don't need them. WALK AWAY. Learn to say no to yourself.
Ask your friends to help you, they are your friends and they will. If you do buy something and get home and feel guilty return it! In most cases it is not irriversible.
I'm a girl, and when I was 15 I saved up 1500 dollars over a summer because I got a job. That year I got to go on a trip to russia with the school and that paid for almost all of it.
You can do it too, you just need to take controle of the situation, hopefully with a little help from your friends.
Good luck. |

Pick a style of clothes and buy only things related to that. Buy two completely new pieces and buy the rest to go around those at yard sales, clearance, goodwill, church rummage, and make some of your own. Have you ever watche dthe American classic "PRETTY IN PINK". You should. There is so much to that movie but just focus on the fashion for now. You don't have to be rich to act like a movie star. That's fun. Then when you outgrow that style do the same with another. |
