How can I cut spending at the grocery store now that gas prices are sharply rising?
I feel it at the pump, but I also feel it on the rising costs of my grocery bill. I already clip coupons and save around $50-60 per month, but that still doesn't seem to be enough to take the heat off our bank account.

Any ideas?

Here's what we do:
We make a food menu that will last us for two whole weeks, and then a couple of days.
We check to make sure we have everything we need, and ONLY buy what we need (NO impulse buying!).
We buy generic brand, and clip coupons like you do.
Most of the time we are able to get lots of food for under 100.00. (we shop at HEB)
I've heard though that Wal-mart price matches produce, and just about anything else.
You might try that.
I hope I helped. I know what that's like.

I know this will sound a little weird, but I say shop around and keep track of what you buy. If you go to the grocery store every other Friday bring a note book with you and mark down the prices of things you normally get (prices before the coupon). I.E. Gallon of mil $2.45. The next time you go shopping, go somewhere else and check the prices they have for the selected items. You can save by purchasing some items at one store and going to another store for other ones. Also check the circulars for stores like Walgreen's. They often have sales on food items to attract people into their stores. Check out some prices there too. You should be able to say at least $20 or more by doing this.

Use the store brand items, instead of brand name. You might find that even without the coupons, you will save more, becuase the major brands make you spend that much more to save the 20-50 cents per item, but you spent double to use the coupon. You might think the brand names don't taste right, but most are just fine, the only thing I don't buy generic is milk, and other diary products. Otherwise, limit the snack foods you buy, and try to eliminate items like soda, and other bottled beverages.

Coupons are definately a good place to start. Also look for sales and buy more basic food, like fruits, vegetables and meat instead of pre-prepared things. Grow your own herbs and use them to flavor your food.

You're not alone. Cut back on the expensive cuts of meat. No more steaks for us, its chicken and hamburger now. Ugh. Dry beans are a great filler item that is cheap although they take a long time to cook.

I've had to start freezing foods. Buy carrot sticks, freeze them before they go bad. I do that with all my vegetables. I also keep the heels to bread to make things like croutons out of them. I turn leftovers into pet foods as well.

I cut back on the amount of soap I use in the laundry, and I only use one fabric softener sheet per dryer load now. I stopped buying paper napkins and only use cloth napkins now. I no longer buy sodas, and make more tea.

Its amazing, the cost of living keeps rising, but my salary seems to be shrinking.

clipping coupons is a great start, but make sure to shop around at the different stores to see the sales. Find out when the food store has double and tripple coupon days. What my wife and I do is we go online to the different food stores in our area and we look at what is on sale. We use both coupons and sale items. When you start doing this you will also realize that many things go on sale in regular intervals and be able to time when something you may need does come on sale. Always try to use the coupons with items that are on sale.
We typically save around 45 - 50% off every single time we food shop. Oh yes and make sure to only buy what you really need. If you are one of those that has to buy that box of cookies, you might want to cut that and other items that you can live without, out of your shopping list. Try following these simple rules and hopefully the savings will add up for your as they have for us!

everything is rising in costs- well what I do is make a menu before hand - write down ideas on dinners - like one night you will have roast- potatoes and veggies ... the other night maybe chicken and so on- this way the shopping is cheaper and you can buy the family packs of meats (divide into 2 or 3 meals) depends on the size of your family) buy bigger bags of potatoes- and some stores have bulk items buy some items that way- in the long run you will save money. Hope this is helpful

I found some food items are cheaper at Target than at the grocery store. Orange juice is like 2 dollars less! Also the beauty products are less there because they sell generic brands that have the same exact ingredients as the recognizable product (Pantene, Neutrogena etc). Check it out. Buying generic brands are cheaper too at the grocery store. I also know people who buy bulk who claim it saves money. Personally I don't have the storage for that but it could help.

THis is what everyone feels now days I think. We have cut back snacks sodas, stick to a list, meal plan more, make list and meal plan togeather such as Meatlaof put at side what need for it and side dish. W have a dessert problem but have it under control to just 2 days week. I also start double up now and then on items that keep well or used more often. That avoids another trip to store for 2-3 items. That take s little time but works out well eventually. Just start on item, like tea bags, especially if on sale, double up. 2nd trips to store should be for items that wont keep long such as the milk, bread, eggs. I also did a research on car insurance and got a better rate but you have to put up higher start up but then next payment skips over if doing monthly. I am also trying to pay off the smalllest bills with extra dollar or two to get paid off. If you have a place to grow tomatoes, you can start in dirt in small cups by seed now in house. CHECK your tire inflation, low tires effect mileage. AS a former checker watch every reciept, mistakes happen! ARE you near Walmart or Walmart grocery, they have a match ads of other store program, helps going store to store. Ask how it works. You can still use the coupons also. good luck

If your grocery store is quite far lessen the trip by walking and such. Try not to waste that much gas by taking it all the way to the store.

Definitely do your own gardening and canning, which I would recommend to anyone who is able. I would go in with some people on a cow to be butchered. It will save you money and you will be stocked up. Try hunting as well. A chicken for some eggs. Being self-sufficient is the way to go. If you have to go to the grocery store, try a place like Aldi's. If a cheap store isn't available, keep doing your coupon's and eat a lot of pasta. It's cheap.

Depends on where you live. Try buying generic brand or shoping at low brand stores. Like Aldis or Save A Lot
