b-milk | How can I get out of paying my ex-wife's debts? |
|
|

;)

It is hard to answer this question with out a few vital facts: Are you referring to debt incurred during the marriage? Are they debts she incurred after a separation? What is her income/your income, and was any of her debts created by the separation(not divorce).
Having gone through this with my husband and his ex-wife, I can tell you that if she incurred any debt due to your separation, you may be ordered to pay her something for it.(Many states call it "rehabilitative maintenance") if she did not work prior to your divorce/separation.) Anything beyond that, if she incurred if after your divorce, she is on her own. Be sure to keep track of your finances to show a judge just what your living expenses are so you do not end up paying more than you should. Likewise, subpoena her financial records and tax statements to ensure she isn't hiding anything either. But if it is shared debt from the marriage, you will be ordered to pay at least a portion of it unless there is an agreement stipulating otherwise.
Good Luck with that! |

It should be in your divorce decree.
If your name is on the debt, it's still your debt. |

you should have gone through that during the divorce unless you weren't married. If they are in your name then you have to pay...sorry. |

If your name is on any of them, then you are liable, unless the courts decide otherwise. If your name is not on them, then simply send them a letter explaining that you are not liable. |

As you can probably guess from looking at the rest of the answers, you don't give enough info, and even at that it depends on the law where you live.
Seriously--if you're talking about a lot of money, you may want to get real legal advice. If you can't afford a lawyer, you may be able to find a local legal aid office that will work for free or very inexpensive. As long as you have a legitimate case of course. |

I don't think you can. If it was incurred during the marriage. fifty percent is yours. |
