How can I have my dream job when I have 5 mouths to feed?
I have a professional stable job that I went to college for. My wife stays home with our 3 kids, and she probably will not go to work until the youngest is in school. I want to be a professional photographer, but they make nothing starting out and the field is saturated. If I stay in my current profession, I will be burned out and hate most of my day. Why can't we have our dream jobs? When can I work on my dream job and enjoy it when I have to be responsible and maintain a stable life for my family?

Life is about choices.

You made a choice when you and your wife had those 3 kids. They come first. Personal job satisfaction be damned, you need to feed and clothe them, you need to provide them with a decent education, you need to provide them with medical care.

You're living in a fantasy land like Star Trek were people can use a replicator to make stuff. The truth is that we have to earn what we have and, with 3 kids, you have to work extra hard to insure they have what they need. Kids are expensive.

So get over it, buckle down, maybe even take a second job. That's how a lot of professional photographers start out, it's their 2nd job on weekends taking wedding photos and whatever while they work a "real" job Monday through Friday to pay the bills.

For all we know, you have no talent as a photographer so don't give up your day job just yet.

When your kids are grown and you'r proud of them, this won't look so bad.

What is more important to you?? Your "dream job", or your family?

Sort it out, material boy!

I wouldn't quit your day job. But stick with your dream. I've always lived by the moto that I'd rather be doing something I love than have to go to a job that I hate.

I would start out small. Start a wedding photo business on the weekends. Most weddings are on weekends. Don't think of quiting your day job cold turkey. You need to gradualy replace your day job with your dream job. Once your wife is ready to go back to work in a couple of years you would have built up a nice business and then can branch out into other photography jobs.

You shouldn't have gotten married and had kids if you wanted your dream job. Little too late by now.

You'll have to wait until they're all out of school to follow your dreams.

I think you are asking the $10 million dollar question here. You can gloat about not being in your dream job or you can take up side jobs being a photographer until you have a good reputation and the business is bringing in enough money to support your family.

Obviously you are doing the responsible thing right now by keeping your professional job, but I would encourage you to start doing weddings, sport team pictures, etc. I used an independent for my wedding. He was the guy who took pictures for the football team that I coached. He got a lot of business from the parents and did very well. But he also worked a full time job for that reason.

Best of luck.

That is about as close as you're going to get to feeling like a single mother of three except they study at night to get a better paying job inwhich normally leads to a career they're not really all that interested in. But it pays the bills, feeds the kids. Some sacrifice they're 'dreams' so that the kids may be able to do better when they grow up.

It's shitty, but it's life. Tha's why we should teach our kids to PLAN life before they live it so THEY may be able to get their dream life. It sounds like your "dream job" is a retirement hobby, actually.. sorry. Something to look forward to and work hard for..

Depending on your location, photography can be a good or useless profession. Would you mind freelancing? If not, research what regions of the country (or wherever) have growing numbers of freelance photographers. Check the U.S. Department of Labor website. They show projected job growth in all employment areas. If you don't mind moving, you may be able to have your dream job. Good luck!

Photography is one of those professions that you can work on in your free time. Focus on one area of photography and get good at it. Build a reputation and portfolio. As your reputation builds, you'll find more income producing opportunities.

Bank as much of the part-time income as possible so that when you make the jump to photography full-time you'll have enough on hand to keep the home fires burning until your photography income is enough to support your family.

A lot of people had hobbies that turned into full time jobs... why not do the photography as a hobby/business... and maybe with some luck by the time your wife is working... you can gradually slide into your dream... Photograhy is an art... and starting out you would be what I call a starving artist... keep you day job... go ahead and start you photog busniess now... maybe on just weekends... start out with cheap prices... asking friends and family... to use you and to refer you to others...

I'm a hairdresser... starting out I had no customers... and if it wasn't for muy husbands income I wouldn't have been able to do what I have done... I built my business through friends and family... advertised some... but my best referals came from word of mouth from the people I had already done work for... I know how you feel... I had to wait to fulfill my goals...

Anyone can have their "dream-job" if they use the greatest tool that is given to all of us, "YOUR BRAIN!"
You say you are college educated, and I'm going out on a limb by saying this; "you are a man??"
Right now you sound like a "spoiled baby," that can only whine about, Me!, Me!!, Me!!!, F**K YOU!!!!"
Since you did not "plan" a thing in your life, you can't look far enough ahead in your life to achieve your dream, anyway!
I bet you only planned on "what position" you were going to put Momma(Wife) "IN" to "S*x Her up" that night, and didn't think that you and Momma's "Horny-Lust" could cause three babies, either!
No one ever said; "Being a Man would be easy, and that your life comes first and foremost!!" A man is strong and firm, and only cares about doing His level best, to provide for Momma(Wife) and His children... A Man(Husband) will go to work everyday at a job(sh*tty-one's) so His wife and children have a roof over their heads, clothes on their back, and food in their stomach. He knows that NO JOB or any amount of money, can replace or be a substitute for Momma(Wife) and His children! Momma and His babies make Him "WHOLE & WEALTHY," without them He is NOTHING! If you have a "brain," then you will know that I can over come any obstacle, and as long as I stay at my current job and work hard everyday to provide peace and security to Momma(Wife) so She can raise my children to grow up and take care of themselves and plan their future and their own family, once they leave mine and Momma's house, then maybe Momma and I can support my dream together, since our babies have grown up and left Momma's house to start their lives.
Planning takes effort and patience, to look past 1 minute, and to see days, even years ahead in your life.
Dreams are GOOD, but you will never acheive a dream by complaining, or whinning about wanting it yesterday. I know this is harsh; but the truth hurts...
Be a Man, and be patient! Work for your dream today, so you can make it happen tomorrow!
Good Luck!!!
