Use coupons. Most companies have sites online and you can go to the sites of the most frequently used items and print off coupons. Check the newspapers for coupons and sales items. Buy multiples of items you use a lot (to stock up on faster used items). If you don't have a coupon or the product you want is not on sale, try the generic or store brand as an option. They are generally simular and are manufactured by a major company.
Try car pooling. When driving, make sure you have a list of places to go and things to get while you are out. Hit each place along the way. Don't make a "special" trip for one or two items.
Call your credit card company. Talk to them about lowering your interest rate. If you have good credit and have been paying on time, they often will do this. (It may just be lowered a little, but depending on how much you owe this could make a dramatic impact).
This is the most important part. Figure out what you NEED and not what you WANT. If there are things you want to have but don't need, get rid of them. (Find cheaper solutions to satellite or phone). Be frugal. Don't buy those jeans because you think you have to have them when it is really you want to have them. If you have enough clothes, don't spend your money on them right now. This is only temporary and you will be able to go back to your old spending habits if you wish. (Probably best to use this as a learning tool to control spending so you can get nicer things down the road).
I wish you all the best! |

Buy in bulk.
Only do large loads of laundry.
Use public transportation and your bike.
Make meals from scratch and freeze them.
Get rid of satellite. Use basic cable.
Only use cell phones if you have them. Get rid of house phone.
Invest in a gas saving car.
I am in the same boat. I am trying to pay off my debt as well. These are the things I am trying to do. Also about dog food, sometimes if you look in the "shoppers" that grocery stores send out, they have specials. When you check out often times they give you manufacturers coupons as well.
If I think of anything else I will come back and add it. Good Luck! |

I'm being laid off soon and have been thinking about this same thing, since we may only be on one income for a few months. The first thing I'm trying is Angel Food Ministries for groceries. For $30 you get a weeks worth of food to feed a family of 4. You can also buy an extra box that includes fruit and vegetables or meat and chicken. I'm going to try it and see if I like the food and then order it again for next month if I like it. Each month the food is different. There are probably other food pantries in your area too.
Buy store brand for everything - give up some of the more expensive foods you buy. Buy more fruits and vegetables to snack on. |

Buy in bulk. Costco is best, but Sam's Club (a WalMart spinoff) is ok. You have to pay for membership (around $50), but prices are much lower and you will save that much in no time. |

Try the 99 Cents store (soon to increase prices by 1 cent, but still...), DollarTree stores, BigLots (still kind of expensive but useful). The first two stores: 99 cents and DollarTree are really that-nothing in the stores cost more than a dollar and I mean NOTHING. EVERYTHING is ONE DOLLAR. From shampoo to clothes washing soap(and household cleaners windows to dryer sheets) to dog treats to make-up to dishes to stationary to crafts and school supplies and toys, just about everything you can think of and nothing is over the price of the stores' names.
BUT WATCH OUT FOR GIMMICKY STORES THAT SAY "99 CENTS BUT THEN PUT IN TINY LETTERS "AND UP". ONLY go to the original 99cents store and DOLLARTREE.
This might help you out a lot.
Also, little tricks like turning your computer AND monitor completely off instead of hibernate or letting it run. This really does help with electricity bills (I tried it myself) and unplug anything with an LCD readout, one of the biggest electricity suckers is your microwave, even when you're not using it. Unplug it. Turn off the TV instead of letting it run in the background-tried this too & it helped. Don't wash everything in hot water and don't use Large setting on your washer if you're washing small loads AND try washing in the evening or at night--helps water bill AND helps save water.
There are many many FRUGAL websites to help you; one I love is The Everyday Cheapskate--it is wonderful.
Hope this helps. |

Get a bike of freecycle, and then use it to go on local trips. Then you will save on gas money.
Balance transfer to 0% cards, depending on what the transfer fee is.
Try to be engery efficient.
Use the microwave instead of the cooker.
Cook from scratch if you can.
Grow your own, if you can.
Please don't listen to the people saying get rid of your pets.
Good Luck! :-) |

there are often shops around called savers etc. they sell products wayyy cheaper and they are nice enough. i have to care for me and my baby and money is very tight. i find that shops like Aldi are good for frozen products and packaged stuff like pet food, crisps, carton drinks. but for you fresh fruit and meats i would make sure you stick to some where like asda or Morrison's which are fairly cheap but also you can trust the quality of the food

okay buy cat and dog food in bulk. i buy a 17 lb. bag of purina for $18.00. do the same with cat food. as far as detergent....get powder detergent. i get vista with bleach for $5.00. meals....you can buy banquet box dinners, they serve four. they come with everything, you just add water.....and there great. we usually get lasagnia, pasta and meatballs, chicken mashed taters and bicuits, chicken and dumplings, cheesey ham and has browns....etc. you may also want to try an aldi's store for randoms. big lots sometimes has food like side dishes and spices, drinks, snacks, etc very cheap, and good! always look for the clearance isle first.....most stores have an isle just for mark-downs. you just have to look! also...in any store like wal-mart or miejer....if you notice something was $2.00 cheaper at miejer, tell the wal-mart cashier.....as long as it's no more than a 5 dollar difference, they have to mark it down. good luck |

One thing that helps a lot is to start buying the Sunday paper and getting the coupons out of it. You can combine coupons with store promotions to save a lot of money. You can check out some of the couponing sites to find more information. |

Get rid of the satellite. $50/month for basic programming? It's crap.
Pirate movies on the internet instead for free. |

First of all, get rid of all the pets and the satellite dish. Start buying everything at discounted stores like Walmart or Target. If you can't afford the name brands, buy a cheaper brand. Buy all your food at Asian supermarkets. Asian supermarkets are cheaper because they're competing with the American chain supermarkets. I feed my family (3 people) with just under $150 a month. I'm Chinese, so rice is part of our meal. A big bag lasts us 6 months for $23. Once in a while, serve instant noodles ($0.49 a pack) or pasta. They're filling and cheap. If your rent is too expensive for you, look online for cheaper apartments. Create a budget spreadsheet that includes your income and your expenses. Estimate your expenses for the month and see where you can eliminate any unnessary expenses. |

1 - Get rid of the cats and dogs. They're resource consumers, and those resources would be better spent on your families.
#2 - Get rid of the satellite bill.
#3 - Look through your food bill. Cut out prepared foods. Buy basics that you can make food with, such as flour, sugar, eggs, rice, etc. It will take more time to prepare, but you can get your parents to do the cooking, since they aren't working.
#4 - Lower the amount of meat that you purchase. It's expensive, and mostly unneeded in your diet.
#5 - If you own your house, look at refinancing your mortgage, and folding any of the other large monthly payments into it. You'll pay more in the long run, but it will lower your monthly payments enough for you to get by.
Many other ways, too - make a budget, see where you are spending your money, and see what you can cut out. |
