First, prioritize your spending.
1. FOOD
2. Utilities
3. Rent
4. Transportation
EVERYTHING else can wait. Even if Visa sues you, there is nothing for them to take.
Next, if there is a pizza shop or fast food joint within 5 miles where you have not talked to the manager THIS week, you are NOT trying hard enough to get a job. NOTE: I am not saying either is a good long term job, but they will buy food, until you get something better.
SELL everything you don't ABSOLUTELY need. If you haven't seen it in 60 days, you don't need it. |

Go to a temp agency. Kelly Temporary Services and Manpower. THere are others. check the net or your yellowpages.
Also, you might consider becoming a substitute teacher if you have a degree. but you better act fast. School is out in about 6 weeks.
Try waiting tables. it sucks but you can get good tips if you have an outgoing personality (I don't).
I hope it works out for you. |

For future reference, from now on make sure you save up for at least SIX MONTHS of car payment, apartment payments, etc. Call it your emergency stash and do not touch it no matter what. That'll prevent something like this from ever happening again.
For now, though, waitresses and bartenders (if you have the know how) can almost always start immediately. Good luck. |

cut back on your spendings. but the wal-mart brand of cola instead of Coke. Shop coupons. cancel your big satelite and take the basic channels. use the computer at the library and cancel internet service. sell unneeded things on ebay. buy eco-friendly lightbulbs and save energy. put on an extra sweater and turn down the heat a little bit. |

Hopefully you are receiving unemployment to help you out a little. If not get yourself there and sign up ..pronto!
Call the car company that has your loan and ask them if you can defer a payment or two.
Rent is a little trickier. If you have a 401 plan you might be able to borrow against it or cash in a CD. If you don't have the funds see if you can borrow the money from your folks .
Fast Money: Head for the restuarants in your area.. Fast cash everyday!.. Now is the time they are hiring for the tourist /summer season. Then keep looking for a permanent job while waiting on tables or bartending. Go for the chain type ..turn over is always higher and when you do get a permanent job ..no guilt feelings if you leave..
Good Luck |

File for unemployment at the local unemployment office.
Go to the local Department of Human Services and see if you qualify for any assistance, such as TEA, or Food Stamps, anything that will help you out.
Run a local ad in a newspaper or put up fliers saying what all you are willing to do. Like say clean houses, or babysit, mow lawns, wash windows, anything. You have to do something now, so don't wait any longer. |

food stamps and welfare are always options untill you can get fultime employment

There are a few things you can do.
If you've been paying insurance on credit cards, maybe now's the time to see if they make the minimum payment for you while you are unemployed.
Check for your local Salvation Army and see if they have a grant for paying rent for 1 month. They may have free groceries once a month and free bread and sweets from local grocers a couple times a week.
Get your car payment deferred. Call them and ask for this particular car payment to be added on to the final payments. You can sometimes defer 4 payments at once. That gives you 4 months free from paying that bill. It just extends the loan.
Apply for unemployment of course.
Are you a Veteran? If so, go to your local Veteran's organization and get assistance. Have your DD-214 or they will help you get it. Get food from them.
Apply for Social Services Emergency cash and assistance. They should have job assistance too. Their job connections pay more than what you'd find on your own.
Will your church assist you with some money for rent? They will send it directly to your landlord. They can give you a food voucher as well perhaps.
Go to a YWCA or YMCA and ask for assistance. They may offer free counseling and free job assistance.
Phone your friends, relatives. Ask for coupons. Sounds crazy I know. Tell them your predicament. Smile and say, "Hey, Invite me to dinner when you KNOW you've made too much food!" Hopefully, they will invite you for dinner and give you contacts or references.
Buy bags of barley for 60-80 cents. Or brown rice. They are both very healthy and grow 3 times their size yielding more food. They are also complex carbs, so you won't have the energy spikes. I put a boullion cube in my rice and my barley. I always add thyme, onions, carrots and celery and have a heyday with that food.
Invite people over to your place to share that fantastic soup! Drink water. It's good for you!
Chamomile tea calms the nerves. Got any candles? Eat by candle light (even with your best china). It may settle your nerves.
Exercise calms the nerves and helps one sleep better. Get rid of your negative energy by exercising.
Be sure to stop any cable service television or get the $7.95 rate. If you can't do that, at least ask for a discount so you don't have to give it up altogether. They usually abide.
Stop your cable and utilize the library for free movies. Utilize them for newspapers too. They have more than you can afford.
Just get the Sunday paper now as it pays for itself in coupons. Cancel the daily paper.
You didn't say what kind of work you did before.
Get a roommate. Apply to be a roommate.
Craigslist is cheaper than E-bay. Craigslist is FREE. E-bay reaches more people, but is more complex, if you can do what's required, great.
If you need anything, ask on Free-cycle in your area. It's a Yahoo internet group. Ask! It's free. No selling allowed, just ask for what you need.
If I can think of more things, I will add them.
Meds can be free via a grant from drug company. Or many places offer 3 months for $12 (K-Mart, Target, Walgreens, Rite-aid) Check with all of them for your med. All the med lists are different.
AAA auto club has discounts at some places. If you already go to those places, utilize the discount.
If you need to lower your auto insurance, go to the $10 AARP safe driving class--it's for any age and saves you money!
One of my friends sold his blood platelets to get through college.
Temp agencies make you job ready! They train you for free.
Good luck. It's rough for lots of folks. It's worse when it's you! |
