Assuming you are working, set up your bank account so that the money is instantly taken out monthly right after you get paid. Have that money transfered directly into a separate account. When you look at your normal checking account you will see what you have left to work with each month.
This is basically the principle of paying yourself first. It is how you will learn to save rather than spend. |

Walk or go by bus to work/college whenever possible - a lot of bus companies offer weekly or monthly tickets, rather than buying two single tickets every day..
Take a packed lunch to work/college, rather buying lunch while you are there.
Take advantage of supermarket multi save items on things you buy regularly.
What I have done is set up a direct debit from the account my wages go into, to another account and cut up the card for the 2nd account so you can't easily dip into it. |

Put it in an high instant access account (get the account registered as to be paid in gross interest), and every 3-6 months invest the accumulated amount directly in shares. (assumes you pay no tax as a stay at home mummy). The reason for the three-six month wait is that fixed charges need a larger amount than £200 to make this method cost efficient.
If you are a basic rate of income taxpayer, the answer depends on what you are saving for! Is it for a rainy day, or for retirement? I guess you know what the options are there.
As a high rate income taxpayer, the answer is most likely to put it in a personal pension (probably a SIPP). |

have you tried to list down everything you spend money on in one day? take out the ones that are non-essentials like bought snacks and coffee. you won't notice it but it adds up. so if you spend 3pounds on starbucks or tea or chocolates a day then that adds up to around 90 pounds a month. |
