One good way to cut down on spending is to think about how long you have to work to pay for the item you want to buy. If you're about to plunk down 10 bucks for a movie ticket, you might want to think about whether you want to spend an entire hour (or half-hour or whatever) to earn the money to do that. If you make $15/hr and you spend $150/month on a cell phone or cable service or whatever, it tends to put things in perspective when you think that you'll need to work 10 hours a month just to pay for that. Also, if you set up you bank account so that you automatically have a certain amount transferred into savings every time you get paid, that can be helpful. But you have to have some discipline and not transfer it back to checking just because you saw a great pair of shoes you had to have. |

if you have 1 bank account where you get all your money from, then you will never be able to save. see i have 2 bank accounts and im only 15. one i cant access much and one i have all access to. so i recommend that you have 2 bank accounts. when you get money, split it into the 2 bank accounts so you can only use 1 of them and the other will build up money that you're not supposed to touch. it works for me cuz im trying to buy a car. hope this helps and good luck :) |

Try putting money in an account that you DO NOT TOUCH. Once it goes in there, it doesn't come out. You have to hold yourself to that or else you'll keep spending everything you make. Give yourself a small amount of spending money so you don't feel deprived, but cut it off at that.
You have to learn some self-discipline. It's hard (believe me, I know) but the older you get the more you need those savings. It's the only way you'll be able to do things like get a house or a car or pay for school, etc. |

Think of a goal of yours and then think of everything you spent money on that you really did not need. Then make a list of things you absolutely need money for, that you cannot do without and estimate how much you spend on these a month, put aside money for these things only. The rest of the money take and put into a savings account. The temptation after saving to spend will be there, this is where the goal comes in. Tell yourself I am not gonna spend it because I would not be able to get my dream house or my car or whatever that goal is. |

Two ideas: first, round up. When you write a check for $1.85, write down $2 in your checkbook and you'll save up those nickels and dimes into real savings. Same with pocket change, drop it into a jar and only spend paper dollars.
Second, take a lesson from romance: "when I think about cheating, I just think about you leaving". That might help you remember the long-term impact and you might spend a little bit less. |
