Starting fresh at the age of 18. That's what I'm talkin about! Okay, for starters, $5k isn't a lot of cash because of the transportation costs involved with moving your life elsewhere with only a couple of bags of clothing and personal effects. There are shipping costs for the stuff you can't carry with you, deposits for your new abode, airfare, etc. So, if you can find a way to drum up a little more cash, you'll be in a much better position. You can weigh the decision to wait and gather more cash or to just jet by answering this question: "Is it worth another year of being in my current life in exchange for increasing the odds that my next life will be a smoother transition and ultimately be more likely to succeed?" For most people your age, it may seem tough to wait, but trust me when I say the old adage of an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is extraordinarily accurate. I would suggest that you have somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000-$15,000 to start anew after accounting for your travel costs. This amount isn't a random number, but will provide for new 'local' clothing, housing, transportation, etc. Also, western Europe is probably not a financially wise destination with your current funds. Gas is nearing $10 a gallon there and the exchange rate is crap. Also remember that wherever you go, you must have the language skills. Go where you can actually communicate with the locals because you will inevitably need employment. It's hard to do a job if you can't understand what someone is telling you. Oh, if you don't want to communicate with the locals, just go live out in the middle of nowhere USA and that'll be just as well. So here is your how to list:
1. Pick a destination (this is the most important because it will influence everything in your new life)
2. Estimate the costs after currency conversion. Use Yahoo! Finance and Google search to compare cost of living differences.
3. Save the money you need
4. Make sure your passport is up to date (if it expires within a year, go ahead and get it renewed)
5. Research the immigration requirements by going to the website of the embassy for the country of your destination
6. Rent a storage locker of some sort to begin storing the stuff that you're going to ship to your destination and take on the plane (I'm assuming 'disappear' means you don't want anyone to know you're gone until you're gone)
7. Research as much as you can about your destination, but don't glorify it (lower expectations lead to a more pleasant arrival)
8. Pay cash cash cash for everything! If you have a credit card, feel free to keep it in case of an emergency, but you should utilize your cash.
9. Check to see if you can setup a bank account in advance of your arrival...if so, wire the funds you need rather than traveling with all of your cash...if secrecy is the issue, ignore this
10. Try to setup some living quarters in advance. A one bedroom unit is preferred in case you have the bad luck of having a crappy roommate.
11. If you don't plan on using a car, make sure you're near public transportation.
12. Once you get there, setup your new life and buy a computer. You can keep in touch with your old life if you want without it being as readily traceable and you can dodge communications easier.
13. Make sure that you have a fail safe plan in place if things don't work out (lucky 13!) This would include money stashed somewhere in case you need to eject from your new life.
14. Be friendly and respectful in your new country of residence and have some fun...you are young after all.
There's a whole crapload of other details, but that'll get you started.
By the way, I don't advocate doing a disappearing act. It's usually best to put a positive spin on your desire for a new life and let others know in advance. The one that always works at your age is, "I'm going someplace totally different so that I can find myself." That also works when you hit your midlife crisis.
One other suggestion, if you want to see different parts of the world and do some good, just go into the Peace Corps or work with another NGO (non-government organization) that is based in other countries. |

if you go to Europe, you will have to learn another language and all of that stuff. Plus, it'll cos tmoney to move to Europe and rent an apartment... live in the U.S. for a while until you are prepared completely to move. |

Depending on what you want to do you may need more than that. You should look into the type of visa you would need in order to work in a foreign country. Look into tax laws too - the irs thinks they can tax for you the next 10 years if you leave the country. If you want to keep a low profile you could try assuming a false identity, and stick to 3rd world places - where your money will go farther. |

I think you should save up more than that, 5k won't get you very far. Go somewhere safe. |

................5K isn't really a lot of money to start a new life with :( but I would definitely pick somewhere cheap, and I don't think Europe is cheap! |

I don't want to burst your bubble, but 5K is not that much, forget about another country, unless you know people there who can help you, but then I guess you wouldn't have disappeared, look into a place you might enjoy starting here in the good ole U S of A, Do you have an occupation that might be in demand, keep that in mind. Parents are usually very knowledgeable and have life's experience's, ask their advise, they won't steer you wrong.
Give the military some thought, or some schooling. |

With 5k, you'll last about a week in Europe. If you're serious about leaving, then you need to consider the developing countries where things are a lot cheaper than in the states. E.g. China, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Mexico etc.. |

Try Japan, although not many speak English there. Tokyo is the best place to disappear. I think other places in Europe are London, Paris and other big cities. |
