How can i encourage my son to save without nagging him?
he is 16 and in his first job. we just want him to save a little a week but at the moment he just blows it all and has nothing to show for it, he works hard for his money and i know he is entitled to spend it how he likes but he needs to learn how to keep hold of some of it, but being his parents it looks like nagging
Additional Details
he does pay us keep and to be fair, since he started work he never asks us to sub him (because he knows we would refuse)

take him downtown and show him all the homeless people and explain to him that is what happens when you dont have any money.

wisdom4u
Charge him rent. Put it in a bank account and give it to him when he's responsible enough to use it wisely.

Do you take rent money from him, if not start doing this.

i put the money I get from my son into an Isa. He doesn't know it but when it matures he will have the money for a place of his own.

And I will get another room back as he has taken over the spare room as well as his own

Show him the cost of driving lessons a car, insurance and tax and fuel and tell him you wont be paying for all of it.

Tell him the most important thing to pay is himself. Encourage it by offering to match a portion of everything he saves over time.

For example, tell him you'll match 25 or 50% of whatever he's saved after 6 months. Then, take the combined amount and put it into a 12 month CD.

Repeat that for the next 6 months, and then the next. At the end of 2 years, he'll be 18 and will have established a habit of putting money aside.

Also, since he's earning his own money, you can start to cut back on what you provide to him. When you write your budget each month, ask him to sit down with you to write his.

Charge him some rent. Put it in a savings account. Then when he graduates, give it back to him. Plus I paid each of my three sons $500 when they became 18 for not smoking and drinking plus graduating from high school.

Pink Monkey
to create a more positive attitude to saving, why not propose that for every $20 you will put in $5 or something like that. it really worked for me when my mom did it (as a huge non saver before!)

when he save a little at all he will get into the whole thing, and u could encourage him about things he could afford in how many weeks etc.

good luck!

Tell him without saving he will never have what he wants and that you arent gonna be able to sort him out anymore he has to stand on his own 2 feet hopefully he will realise he has to save for himself

Talk to him about success stories...young business people who have made money young from property...find articles to share...if he is still unimpressed then you could ask him to open a savings account, which if he puts a set amount in weekly, then you will add a little to it each year....but it is hard really...he needs to learn himself...I wish I had parents like you when I was 16! I would be a millionaire now!

deni
how about asking him for a little house keeping, then you could save it for him? that way in a few months you could give it back to him, or next christmas or something, and show him what can be shown for saving

Midnight_Angel
Dont nag him, But when he has gone and spent it all and comes to you for money or saying he needs something, say to him well if you put a little bit a side then you would be able to buy things you need.

Im ok with my son hes 16 and goes to college, we encouraged him from the age of 5 when we opened his bank account that money is an inportant part of life and to put a little by for when hes older.Hes bank balance is much more healthier than mine is.

fallin into grace with you....
what bout like tell him to save up for a car or a moped, hes takin it for granted, i no so many people who tried like mad and havnt got one, tell him hes lucky and like dont give him n e money if u already do so that he has to pay for his own stuff

Does he pay into the house keeping? if not i suggest you MAKE him start paying his way, even if you do not want to do this you can get the cash and put it in to an account for him when you thinl he is responsible enough. There are many things you can do for all your kids like having a prize for those who have saved the most and who has done it each week, npt just waiting six weeks and putting £50 in. Try and show by example so he sees the benefit of saving, you never know he may suprise you and excel in what he does. Is he going to be taking driving lessons? Research the cost together and come up with a plan so he saves so much each week and for every £100 he saves for learning to drive you will reward him with a ten pound bonus, then after learning and his test will come the car, do it one step at a time so not to overwhelm him and i am sure he will be so wrapped up in wanting to grow up and mature and drive etc....he will not realise just how much he has done until you tell him how proud you are that he has managed to do all of this. I had a horrible up bringing mam was an alchoholic but this was my dream of what would happen and one day it could still if i have children though i have to get ivf through pcos, antway good luck with your son he is lucky to have a mum that cares as you do, sarahc81
