I would say at $500 a month you're getting off pretty cheap. You don't say how old you are or if you work full time or go to school. If you went out on your own you'd have to pay rent, utilities, food, etc. My advice would be to find a higher paying job.

kadel
Get a job that pays more. Ask your parents if they would not charge you if you went back to school so you could earn more money. Get a Pell grant to pay for the training. If you want to go to college, beauty school or whatever, they can help you get grants to pay for it.
If that is not feasible or you already have training and just have a low paying job, look for another job. Spruce up your resume and get out the yellow pages and call companies that hire people with your skills. Ask if you can fax over your resume and to who's attention. If you make that little you will never be able to make it on your own.
There are also live in jobs where you don't need an apt like living in and caring for an elderly person or live in child care-those jobs are usually advertised in the Sunday paper. You don't have to buy your groceries with a job like that either. I had someone live with us and take care of the kids while I was at work, cook and clean the house while she took graduate college classes at night. She ate my food so she didn't pay for food, utilities or rent. She worked for me for three years and saved a lot of money. She is now a Ph.D. psychologist in Louisiana. There are nasty people to work for too, so size up the people you interview with and make sure that you are off two days a week and only work 40 hours a week.

good grief that's a high rent for only 856 a month.Get your own place

knowsitall
Stop paying them. It is too much. Try to find a cheaper room somewhere else.
If you only have $856 a month after taxes that is not much. If it is a full time job it should be twice that.

try buttering up your parents, or stiking up an agreement, such as they could take x amount out of what you owe them fro rent if you do some chore or task for them...

Create another bill. It's amazing that when we have bills to pay we always find the money to do it. So you just have to figure out how soon you want the money and make another bill to pay. I know it sounds crazy but it will work.
Also try talking with your parents and tell them you want to save this money for something you need or want and see if they will help you save it. Or at least lower your rent for a while.
Good luck.

I think that you should probably talk to your parents and ask them why they are taking so much money for rent. They could be setting some aside to help you when you are ready to truly start looking for a place of your own.

First sit down with your parents to reduce your rent by 200 a month in exchange for you painting the property you live in or plumbing work or landscaping.
If that doesn't work you might have to get a second job
