In Ireland we have a Supplementary Welfare Officer who can issue funds for the interim period until your Social Welfare claim comes through. It is repaid from the claim. Your local clinic or public health nurse may be able to point you in the right direction.

Also consider your church. Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul (Catholic) come to mind, and some towns organise meals for homeless. I understand you don't actually have to be homeless to attend, but I haven't first-hand experience. Ask at the enquiry desk of your local Sainsbury or other supermarket if they give their short-dated stuff to a charity (which one? then go contact them) or if you are friendly with your greengrocer, he may give you damaged items he would otherwise bin. Doesn't work so well in supermarkets - they still look for some payment. But if you know someone working there, they may have permission to use such items.

Once long ago, I got scraps from the butcher for the cat, and asked for suet as well. All free. I made pastry with the suet and filled a pie with the best parts of the scraps plus whatever veg was left in the fridge. It was tasty, but had to be eaten hot. Not nice cold. But it fed us that day.

When you do get some money, shop late in the afternoon when prices are reduced to clear. Yesterday I got 6 eggs 50c, 3 turnips 25c, sausages 56c, potatoes 70c and chicken fillets 52c. Today's dinner for two cost about one euro each. Veg is cheaper than meat, so add plenty to a stew. Cook enough in one go for a few meals - it takes less power to reheat (or microwave) than cooking from scratch, will help keep bills down.

You asked about coupons or free food. I googled, found (but not checked)

Try going to your local Church and see if they can help or contact Social Services....You can ask for an emergency payment while waiting for JSA

The hard truth here is that very little help is available .... but try the DWP for a crisis loan as food is an absolute priority. The only other option is family, friends and neighbours ... people can be really helpful when they know your situation.

You can also join your local freecycle group (on yahoo) and ask if anyone has surplus vegs and fruit from their allotments - you have nothing to loose, and you could get a positive answer or 2...
You could also try to sell things on ebay if you have old stuff you don't use, to get a little spare money, but that will take a few days.
Apart from that, I'm all for the good old beg and borrow from friends and family, or even neighbours (you can always replace the food they give you once your JSA finally comes through).
Good luck

Go to your local social services they will give you food vouchers to tide you over. if that fails contact the local Samaritans they will be able to point you in the right direction of breakfast clubs and shelters etc. You do not need to be homeless for all of these. Good luck

ok well try selling unwanted thing for money and use jobs+ for a quick job also free stuff may give free coupons and maybe family or friends could help you in this situation and make a veg soup that int a joke also if you live near wood land or fields where apples and blackberrys grow pick them not the farmers ones just the ones that are growing ask for a job at your local super market and buy porridge it can be breakfast and make a nice pudding hope this helps

honey
You could try the Salvation Army.
I used to live next door to a Salvation Army Major, and they told me Supermarkets gave them sandwiches and other bakery items regularly. In fact they received more than they could distribute,so the supermarkets ended up donating it to the local zoo instead.
If your hubby is diabetic, maybe your GP can write to Social Services on your behalf.
Wishing you all the best

well, my family is in the same place, what a lot of people dont notice is that there really is food in the kitchen, just not stuff you want to eat. is there any soup? or beans? any canned stuff? if not, then i would suggest calling the government and stating your case, they may be able to help you understand what to do. in america, we get unemployment and food stamps if we cant afford anything, i dont know how it works where you are, but i would try looking it up. good luck

If you go to the job centre you can ask for a crisis loan till your money comes then they'll just take a couple of pound out of ur money each week wen u do get it. Good luck and dont worry we all go through bad times. Make sure u get in there early monday morning and you'll have it by dinner time.

Hello and I am very sorry you are in the situation that you are in. I know that there are many agencies that specialize in helping families with this problem. Many of them are Churches which have programs called Angel Food, Helping Hands, etc. I know that most churches offer help and do have food donation banks. The good thing about some of them is that they are based strictly on your income. I am not sure where you live but here in the United States our government offers food stamp programs and if you are in need they will issue you a card and put money on it for you that day. Hopefully your government offers this to. Other than churches and government help, I know that there are charities that help with this as well. I would call around and ask. I know that is hard to do sometimes for obvious reasons but I know you will find somewhere great with nice people who would enjoy helping you. Take Care and I wish you luck!!!

You can get food stamps. I don't know how it works where you are at, but you might want to find out.

You could try asking supermarkets if they have any food which is close to its use by dates. Failing that, maybe ask friends or family if they could lend you some money. I'm in a similar situation and my parents got me a weeks shopping. Its embarrassing but you need to eat and you can repay them when you are able to.
